Ebay Boycott! 2/18 - 2/25

There is a growing movement to enlist buyers and sellers to participate in an upcoming boycott of Ebay to protest their recent fee and feedback changes.

This is from a seller friend of mine:

Ebay's listings have been falling steadily every day since they announced the FVF and feedback changes on Jan 30. The last statistic I saw (for Sunday) was that day had 165,000 or so less listings than the day before and Feb was down 1.1% in listings over last year. (Must find the web site that's tracking this).

I think they must be getting a little nervous since they are offering 20 cent listing fees for today (2/13) as a "boycott breaker."

Also, the movement has a forum on Delphi. They are polling to see which 2-3 sites everyone would prefer to move to en masse as alternatives to ebay.

Why Boycott Ebay?
Grievences:
1. Final Value Fees are increasing about 66% for the first $25.
2. 30-60% is what the current fees take from our profits! Potentially even more, if we use any extras.
3. Feedback changes.
The proposed changes are more harmful than beneficial:
A. Sellers will no longer be allowed to leave negative feedback.
B. Feedback older than 12 months will no longer be displayed.
C. Suspended members' feedback will be removed, thereby potentially skewing the numbers incorrectly.

This is a means for members to unite, and to come together with a basic plan. This is that list:
1. Unite to sell and buy on one or two alternate sites.
2. Refrain from buying on ebay until ALL demands are met.
3. Refrain from selling on ebay until ALL demands are met.
4. Stay committed to each other buy letting sellers know you are buying from their non ebay auctions.
5. Stay committed to each other by letting buyers know where you will be selling.
6. Join myspace.com/boycottebay the source of our direction.

Demands:
1. Restructuring the fees, to a REASONABLE rate.
2. Revamp the FB process, BUT, not in the way proposed. We WILL NOT be held hostage by extortionist members.
3. Immediate release of paypal funds.
4. Refunding of Reserve Fees, if the item sells.

Please join in the boycott! Please consider before selling or buying on ebay in the next week. Many of you will claim that a boycott will not accomplish anything, and has been unsuccessful in the past. There is a lot more movement behind this though, especially from within the seller community. Remember that it takes individuals to band together to accomplish change in any area. Please think twice before buying or selling during the boycott (or at least after the new fees go into effect on 2/20) and remember that you can be part of the problem, or you can be part of the solution.

Even though I don't shop ebay since money is not so plentiful, I will join the boycott. All this new and so called improvments are not what they should be.

Thanks, I agree, and I'll be eagerly awaiting sellers' decisions as to an alternate site to move to.

I currently have items on Ebay that will be ending after the boycott goes into effect, but before the new fees do (and I learned of the boycott, after listing). One thing I do disagree with is that the boycott starts 2 days prior to the fee changes, which causes sellers to lose 2 good days of selling time to clear out the last of their items. For this reason, I will sell my items and jump on the bandwagon the day the fees go into effect, even if I have items that require relisting.

The vintage listing on ecrater are increasing, and I think it looks like more on Etsy as well.

FYI, VBO (Vintage Blow Out) is starting midnight on the 14th - but don't buy starting the 18th :) buy early! Search ebay for VBO. I believe Specialist Auctions or Main Street Vintage is also doing VBO (eek can't remember which!)

I have boycotted ebay for over 2 years,
Good to see others getting hip or wise to this business.
EBay should better protect, guarantee full customers satisfaction,
(money back!)
Investigate scammers, not just let users do all the work.
Boycotte'em :eusa_clap

You've won me over. I will participate in the boycott as well know that I see a clear explanation of the changes ebay is putting into affect. Fighting greed and unfairness is good.

Or see if there's someone here on the Lounge who's willing to pay the price you're hoping to get for it!

I have posted a number of dresses on the Lounge in the past. I currently have one pattern no one's interested in. Not that I'll be running over to eBay to list these items but I have only sold a few of my very nice items on the Lounge. Sometimes no one here wants what you have.

Oh, so true. And a lot of people here are not willing to pay what an item's worth, so they're not interested.

Since they announced the fee changes on Ebay, though, most of my items have been selling for quite a bit less than they would have 2 months ago.

I'm hoping to get a thoroughly unreasonable price, so selling it here won't do at all.:D

Sure thing. Here are the grievances, with a little explanation:

Grievences:
1. Final Value Fees are increasing about 66% for the first $25.
2. 30-60% is what the current fees take from our profits! Potentially even more, if we use any extras.

Ebay charges a listing fee, fees for extras like Buy It Now, bold listings and extra photos. Sellers also pay a fee based on the final price of the listing once it sells, called the Final Value Fee (FVF). Ebay has been steadily raising prices for many years, and now it has reached the point where they have increased the FVF so much that sellers will pretty much make no profit on any item that sells for less the $25. Also not noted here is that power sellers, those who have big stores and do a lot of Ebay business, are getting fee breaks, while Ebay is cutting even deeper into the pockets of small sellers.

If sellers cannot leave negative feedback, they have no way to protect each other from non-paying buyers, buyers that leave negative feedback, etc.

There is more discussion of the changes in this thread - http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=27463
