Interesting - I thought that the narrower brims were a 1960s phenomenon, but the brims were already getting shorter in 1956 as there are almost no pictures of wide-brim fedoras. The brims seem to be about 2 inch to 2 1/4.

Guess the flat top, uncreased style (aka The "X" Hat) didn't quite save the hat industry, eh?

Even earlier in some cases, as I've seen ads for Dobbs and other Hat Corporation of America hats from 1953 and 1954 with quite narrow brims.

Thanks for posting. Interesting to see a Fraenkel Wien Velour advert. They made all styles not just the Alpine (popular in the 50s) number in the advert.
