Help with Overcoat Alterations

Hello,

My latest acquisition from Ebay is a great Hart Schaffner and Marx coat from Kleinhans. Generally it fits well however the sleeves were very short. I noticed that there was some alterations that had been done so I undid the stitching and found another 3 inches or so in extra length. That made them a lot better, but if a tailor alters them for me they will be a bit shorter again.

Here are some pictures:

I was wondering if you wonderful ladies and gentlemen had any ideas on what options I have for the sleeves to retain as much as the length as possible. As you will see from the pictures it is a chesterfield. Can you have velvet added to the cuffs as well or would you maybe add a velvet detail to the cuff? I was thinking that the sleeve could be lengthened with a velvet strip a couole of inches up the sleeve. Or would you add some material to the end of the sleeve and use that to sew up the inside of the sleeve?

I would be really interested on your thoughts. Oh and if you could help me date the overcoat that would be great.

Thanks and regards,

Peter

I think your best bet would be to have the tailor add extra material at the cuff that would be hidden inside the sleeve, and then use that as the attachment point. It will give about 1.25 to 2 cm in additional length at the cuff.

Thanks Peacoat, I appreciate your suggestion. This is probably what I'll do.

The sleeves may still be a little short even with doing that.

Has anyone used any other ways to extend an overcoat sleeve?

It's not that bad. It will allow you to flash your cufflinks. Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin used to cut their jacket sleeves high, just so that their cufflinks could show.
