It is amazing how much of modern quantum physics has its roots back in the 1930s.
Now physicists believe they have discovered a particle that is both matter and anti-matter, an idea that was first theorised in 1937 by an Italian theoretical physicist, Ettore Majorana. The new particle has been dubbed the “Angel Particle” after Dan Brown’s thriller Angels and Demons which involves a bomb made from a combination of matter and anti-matter. (In real world practical terms, it is thought the discovery of the Angel Particle could be used to help bring about a technological revolution related to super powerful quantum computers.)

Physicist Ettore Majorana has a golden era mystery surrounding him! In March 1938, he disappeared under mysterious circumstances while going by ship from Palermo to Naples. His body was never found and it was later discovered that he had emptied his bank account before leaving. Much later, an Italian press investigation found a witness who reported seeing him in Buenos Aires in the years immediately after World War II. Finally, in 2015, the Rome Attorney's Office released a statement saying that Majorana had been alive between 1955 and 1959 and living in Venezuela. No explanation for the disappearance has ever been established, although there are all kinds of half-baked conspiracy theories involving spies and the Fascist quest to develop advanced weapons programmes prior to the war.
As Paul Harvey used to say: “And that’s the rest of the story.”
