Myth doesn't mean untrue but true at a higher level. Thus a mythical king may not have existed in the so-called real world but represents the idea of kingship and what that entails (or should entail). Once Rudolf attained mythical status, he became just as important as any other figure at Yule. Joseph Campbell and Mircea Eliade wrote much about this in their academic careers.
