78s to wonder if, ok, maybe *today* will be the day I get out the bike by...

First off in 1937 with Teddy Wilson and His Orchestra, and a sublime Billie Holiday vocal on an obscure Warner Bros. tune, "How Could You?" If you've only heard it in the background of Porky Pig's adventures, well, this is how it *should* sound.

After a brief interval to turn the bacon, we continue in 1931 with Ethel Waters, and a subtly comic performance of "You Can't Stop Me From Loving You." If your only frame of reference for Miss Waters is her days as a gospel-singing grandma with the Billy Graham troupe, her 1930s records will be quite an eye-opener. "You can wear socks without garters, carry lace handkerchiefs too..."

My commute to work was rocked by Eddie Heywood's version of Begin the Beguine (Swing Era, 1944 volume). Also listened to Exile on Main Street--1972 is seeming about as far away as 1944 these days....

Now that's some great stuff there, especially Old & In The Way. What a fantastic lineup! Next up should be - without Jerry but still with Peter Rowan - some stuff from Muleskinner, like...hmmm...let me think...ah, yes: put on the live version of 'Dark Hollow' from 1973! Gotta love Clarence's easy & smooth solo on this piece. And then - how about some stuff from the David Grisman Quintet? Fish Scale? Opus 57? ;)

You can put Lux in my Corn Flakes
And tell me my brain's good as new
And you can be as aloof as the Chrysler roof
But You Can't Stop Me From Loving You
:D

About How Could You?, I think it should sound the way Dolly Dawn recorded it, altho maybe it's because her voice wouldn't be out of place coming from a Frank Tashlin-era Petunia Pig lol. But Billie and Teddy win on timelessness (and sublimelessness).

Something 'bout that Kansas City sound - it's 'bout the blues....I dig it, I really do.

78s to wait for the wind to stop shaking the walls by --

Starting off in 1932 with Connie Boswell (not yet "Connee") and an ever-so-jazzy solo turn on "Concentratin' On You." The ARC all-stars back her up in their usual ever-so-jazzy style.

Next, back to 1929 for Fred Rich and his Orchestra and a ducky Columbia of "Wishing and Waiting For Love." The Rollickers, not the Revelers, Cavaliers, or Rondoliers, harmonize the lyrics.

See your Freddie Rich and raise you the California Ramblers. Ed Kirkeby actually sang like a Lonely Guy (and I would know).

As to all those quartet names, my P.G.F. (the musical one) was actually in a 4tet called The Cavaliers on the Redpath Lyceum in 1921. We think the name was a set thing on the circuit - ie, there were always Cavaliers, the boys just changed. They wore tails or movie-musketeer getups, and played various instruments besides singing. Sort of the Four Freshmen of chautauqua.

I've been looking for a copy of "Wishin' and Waitin' for Love" for years now.

Another pleasant record featuring the Rollickers is Pathe 36729/Perfect 14910, "Clorinda"/"Three Blind Mice, accompanied by the Chicago Loopers, a Trumbauer small group featuring Bix. Scarce record, my copy (of the Pathe issue) is so worn you can practically read a paper through it. I'd also live to find a copy of the OTHER Rollickers/Loopers side "I'm More Than Satisfied". Never seen a copy of that one "in the wild" as it were.

78s to finish a writing project right at the deadline by --

Now playing, a fine 1934 side by Leo Reisman and his Orchestra, featuring one of the better pop tunes of the year, "Lost In A Fog." The vocal is by Miss Sally Singer, a San Francisco debutante who followed the band east, and who has by anyone's standards the best name a mid-thirties dance-band vocalist could ever possibly have.

Next up, an exquisite rendition of one of the best movie ballads of 1937, "Let's Put Our Heads Together," by Jimmie Grier and his Orchestra and sung by Joy Hodges. The tune is from "Gold Diggers of 1937," and hardly anyone ever recorded it, which is a pity because it's a lovely song.
