Sylvia -- Bobby's In Vicksburg (1983)

Lyrics
Fire burns in the street below
Such is the fate of Atlanta
In my diary I write these words
Though I can't believe what's happened

Union troops go marching through
Like an endless blue river
It's been weeks without any news
Am I the only one who remembers?

Bobby, Bobby's in Vicksburg
Bobby, hey will you ever come home?
Bobby, Bobby's in Vicksburg
As the cannons round me thunder
The South is going under
And Bobby's in Vicksburg

I search the names of casualties
For one Bobby D. Barker
It isn't there to my relief
But every list grows longer

Today I gave my wedding ring
To raise money for the fight
To help my Bobby more this way
I just pray he knows I'm trying

If I could I would get on a horse
And ride, ride, ride
But I look out at Union troops
On every side

General Grant and General Lee
Can't you see what you're doing to me?
I can't go to him,
He can't get to me

Bobby's in Vicksburg
As the cannons round me thunder
The South is going under
And Bobby's in Vicksburg

Here' a video of (in my opinion) the greatest blues singer of all time: the unforgettable Bessie Smith with her most famous record, the St. Louis Blues from 1929...

Those are some great ones, folks. The Sylvia song reminds me of this:

Henryk Wars and the Syrena Rekord Dance Orchestra (Poland) -- Nikodem (Yiddish foxtrot) (1933)
vocal by Adam Aston

Henryk Wars (aka Henry Vars) was also the composer of the theme song to the TV show Flipper.

Richard Diamond, Private Detective, "The Stolen Purse," May 22, 1949. A walk on the Damon Runyan side, with radio hoods conversing like out-takes from Guys and Dolls. Written by Blake Edwards, Richard runs into kindly grannies who are not what they seem, and beautiful redhead girl friend Helen Asher gets drawn into all the ugliness. Real good stuff~

Wow, hadn't heard that one in a while. I loved Glen Campbell growing up. When learning guitar, songs like Gentle on My Mind, Wichata Lineman, etc. were easy and popular. As I got older, I went for more edgy like Willie, Waylon and Merle, or more vintage like Conway and the "Possum". He has a nice voice, just a little too light for me...
