Now playing, what should be the unofficial theme song of the Fedora Lounge, Kay Kyser and his Orchestra with "Way Back In 1939 A.D." Harry Babbitt and Ginny Simms do their usual excellent job of comic harmonizing on the vocal:

"Awwww, I'd serenade ya, dear Juliet, with a portable radio. With no aerial! Wayy back in 1939 A. D.!"

"Ahh, Romeo -- One Orson Welles, Two Thanksgivings, and Three Little Fishies -- way back in 1939 A. D.!"

Next up -- back to 1933 A. D. with the Pickens Sisters, and "Happiness Ahead."

Dang it the only rendition I have is by Gray Gordon & His Tic Toc Music, and it's pretty listless - probably 'cause they were recording on January 9, 1940, a little past the expiration date.

Gordon's singer was Cliff Grass, the guy who played the clarinet solos on Guy Lombardo's TV programs. I believe he was the only guy in show biz who got his stage name from a shirt laundry. (He was Iliff - a German name of Old Norse origin - till he sent a shirt in that came back marked Cliff.)
