A Johnny popper starting up and taking off.

An old hay baler with a little gas engine working in the field (behind the Deere).

Small hail or rain on a metal roof outside my window.

Mourning doves on a cool summer morning as I wake up.

The sound my feet made on that old, unfinished wood floor at the local hardware store when I was little.

A nicely sharpened pencil on paper.

Those old hymns on a Sunday morning, heartfelt if not on tune.

Silence. True silence.

The crickets are making a truly impressive amount of noise right now, and so is some other insect. I love the sound.

We have an organic garden, and it just crackles with noise, during the day from birds, and during the night from these guys. I have an elderly next-door neighbor, and she likes to watch the birds; she says the numbers have gone up hugely with the garden, and refers to it as "your bird sanctuary."

I love the muted sound of my dog snoring and barking in his sleep.

Though I could live without his efforts at opera, I like my cat purring. Once at night I rolled over onto him (thank goodness I'm not a big guy) and he just made these happy babyish "mee" noises and purred like a maniac under my shoulderblade.

The 'pop' of a champagne bottle being opened for champagne cocktails...

The rattle of ice inside a stainless steel shaker as I make a manhattan...

The sizzle of a hot grill...

The crackle of a fire in the fireplace...

And the sound of the fountain in the backyard as I sit quietly smoking a cigar reflecting on the day's events...

1. My wife's gentle snoring

2. My kids laughing

3. Old fashion perk coffee brewing

4. Snow crunching under my feet on an early morning run.

:eek:fftopic:

As much as I hate the cold, running in freshly fallen snow (best when it's still lightly snowing out) not only has the crunching sound but usually the only other sound is my breathing. The quiet is refreshing. I also love the little white breath clouds, the melting flakes on my face and clown shoe marks left in the snow as I pass along.

The children who play Marco Polo at the pool; I hate them.

The call of any black plumed bird.

The sharp crack of a near by lightning bolt.

The sound of one hand clapping.

Colbert giving us the word.

The way things sound in a deep fog: muted and dislocated.
At a dance performance, the sound of feet softly hitting the wooden floor when there is no music.
At the orchestra, the collective breath the musicians take as the conductor's baton rises just before the first note.
The sound of the first fat raindrops as they plop on the sidewalk.
The sound of another person's heartbeat.
