If it makes you feel any better, the Fifth Street boots are apparently being retooled in response to constructive criticism and are supposed to come out sometime in the near future.

In the meantime, I have -- and love -- the Bayfield boots. I don't know that I would wear them with a city suit, though they're absolute naturals with tweed or corduroy. In fact, I'm wearing them today with navy-blue chinos and a tweed jacket.

The mini-lug sole looks more aggressive in photos than it does on your feet. Frankly, it disappears into the ground, while offering excellent traction. I picked these up during the Columbus Day weekend sale and was even more impressed with the reality in the store than I was with the concept I'd read about online. Oddly, nice/rugged seems to be in this season, offering those of us on this lounge a rare opportunity to be both stylish and fashionable. I know how (un)important that is to us all. ;)

I live in an area with more dirt roads than paved roads, and these boots just make a lot of sense as "nice" footwear that won't get destroyed by a gravel parking lot.

If you get a chance, please post some photos -- and reactions -- once they've arrived.

I will be sure to. They did not have my size of 11E in stock. But I know from another post here on the Lounge (Matt Deckard said this I think) the the Bayfields are made on a kinda narrow last. So I ordered an 11 1/2 EEE. We shall see how they fit.

If only the Bayfields didn't have the rubber sole. They are sharp though. And, for the uses you laid out, they'd be great. I'd love to see a pair that someone took to their cobbler to have leather soles sewn on.

AE will switch soles on most any model* for a $50 fee. For $125 they'll let you change colors on the uppers as well giving one lots of options for two-tones and spectators.

*The Italian line excluded

I got to see the Bayfield's at the AE store in Dc a couple weeks back and they are much nicer in person than online. The color is good and they have a nice style to them. If I didn't want a pair of wingtip boots so bad I might get those. And I agree about the sole, its not as aggressive work boot like as the pics online make them look. They will be a nice wet nasty weather but I still need to wear something moderately nice boots.

Ive tried some StacyAdams boots. Great retro look. Very soft leather and leather sole too, but seemed a bit cheap. The last seems a bit narrow. In fact it seems more like a big shoe than a small boot. Maybe thats better if its just a dancefloor shoe.
I would recommend having a cobbler glue on a vibram protective sole guard.

Flat-top, let me know next time youre in Midtown. Theres a shop on 38th & 8th that sells SA, as well as less expensive SA knockoffs.
