Akubra Overload

Apologies to our Antipodean friends for mentioning the cricket but ...

Being a hataholic, it's been really distracting watching the Ashes because every time the camera pans to the crowd I'm fascinated by trying to spot all the different Akubras people are wearing.

One question I had was that, given temperatures of 37C and upwards in Adelaide, I'm surprised by the number of what look to be dark felt akubras and even some leather drover-style hats. Commonsense would tell me that the dark colours would really absorb the heat rather than reflect it?

Can any Auzzies (or others) explain why the dark hats are still worn in these conditions?

many thanks!

Paul.

37C? Wait until it gets hot!

I guess it could be that any effects of dehydration caused by the wearing of darker coloured hats can be counteracted by the consumption of vast quantities of beer. Beer, unfortunately, doesn't have the same restorative powers over sunburn and skin cancer.

Just saw on one of those TV "insider" shows that Oprah is taking 300 fans from her show to Australia this month and as part of their "booty" they ALL get Akubra's !! Not a bad deal . Trip to Oz and an Akubra ta boot and all paid for by someone else :) ( they will be the same style as Oprah wears, NOT a CD. Oh well :) )

Wait all the same style that Oprah wears? Which style does she wear anyway?

If you get an Aussie hat, it ought to LOOK like an Aussie hat, right :)

It looks great, Sulla! I'm kinda jealous, I never could get that damn center crease bash down. All my hats end up teardrops, no matter what I do lol!

Neo,
When I do a center dent/front pinch crease I always use tons of steam and get the center dent the way I want it hieght wise front to back and set it aside for a day. I've found that this 'sets" the dent and allows me to add the front pintch without altering the center dent much. I use liberal amounts of steam as I have a hat steamer from an old Wormser store that closed down in Dallas about 15 years ago. The only thing bad about it is the amount of electricity it uses when running !!! :) ( I looked at my meter one day while using it and was amazed at how fast that damn dial was spinning :)

Ok last week I won a FederationIV Deluxe on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...dzVt8II%3D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT . Got if for a good price I think. Well It came in the mail today. Here it is out of the box no brushing or rebashing. It is a 61 and I am a 60 so it is a little loose but I can fix that. Question, I have a hat shop near by. Would you bring it in for a cleaning and blocking?. The bash seems a little off center.

Looks fine to me :) But I like my hats better as they have more wear and aren't as "perfect" as new :) I'm a wearer, not really a collector. If you don't like it then by all means, take it to your hatter ( or send it) and get it how YOU wan't it. Or do it yourself as there seems to be a wealth of info available here on how to :)

Why do you ask?
Jeff, the reason the bash is off is the hat is "turned" to achieve a wonky brim effect as seen in the hat Harrison Ford wore in Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's achieved by placing the hat straight on your head un-bashed, then literally turning it clockwise until the brim warps. if you place in on your head with the pinch centered you'll see what I mean.

Hope this made sense.

Randy

Here is a quick visual aid. Note how far forward on Ford's head the ribbon bow sits, the BACK of the bow not the knot is over his ear in this frame... a classic example of how they got the iconic look for the hat in Raiders.

For those in the know, would you say that's quite a screen-accurate Indiana Jones Raiders fedora? It looks pretty close to me... Nice hat, are pleased with it this way, or do you want to try to address that issue with the off-center position?

Was watching NBC news this evening and Kerry Sanders came on doing a sound bite and he was wearing an Australian model Coober Peddy ( the one with the leather band) ! Was good to see another Akubra even if it was'nt the "official" Form model :)
