I enjoy topics like this. Here are some of my current favorite movie hats:

I. Indiana Jones' brown fedora. It is almost without doubt the most iconic movie hat of all time.

II. Jef Costello's grey fedora in Le Samourai. This is definitely a favorite because of not only the great looking proportions, but because of it's associated film. This film is one of my favorites, after having seen it two times. It portrays an existence of solitude, loneliness, and danger, quite well.

III. The Man With No Name hat. This is fantastic western hat. It's almost as iconic as the Indiana Jones hat, but representing the western, rather than the traditional adventure genre.

IV. James Bond's trilby. For some reason, I have always liked it. It has a class that suits Bond well, and I like those hat rack scenes in some of the earlier films.

V.Fred C. Dobb's fedora in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Bogart's hat in this film is rumored to have inspired the Indiana Jones hat (despite looking noticeably different), and it shares the same rugged qualities, although a more worn appearance. There's something inspiring about this hat, and I sometimes think about whether or not the thing still even exists today, somewhere.

I love a lot of the lids that Humphrey Bogart wore, of course -- "Big Sleep," "Maltese Falcon," and "Casablanca." Including one that nobody ever mentions, the fedora he wears as Bette Davis's horse trainer in "Dark Victory." There's just something of the "I wear this hat for all occasions" about it, and one of these days I'm going to see about having a hat like it custom made.

Bogart is the reason I began wearing fedoras, and this one he wore in Tokyo Joe is my favorite:

Ever since the dewy-eyed bride signed us up for the cable television bells-and-whistles package, and then Netflix, I find myself watching old movies during my daily workout routine (never could read while exercise-biking), which goes a long ways toward breaking the tedium. The movies don't even have to be so good if the attire, especially the hats, is worth checking out. I'm diggin' the ability to back up the movie and freeze the action with the remote-control gizmo, all without having to break my rhythm.

Couple of days ago I started watching "It Happened One Night." Great hats in the crowd scenes. It's gettin' so I'm generally preferring the hats of that era, early 1930s, to the '40s styles, as had been my preference not so long ago.

Check out the original Scarface, 1932. And Little Caesar, 1931. Both played the other night. Tremendous hats and variety.

I always liked Errol Flynn in Western movies, such as "Silver River" and "They Died With Their Boots On." He does the Army or cavalry hat really well. Makes me go for the wide brims.

Not this specific hat, but the Back to the Future series I think is what got me interested in vintage.

One of my all time favorite movies, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford also has some great old lids.

Indy was the first hat, I remember in a movie, that I thought was cool. Then all the film noir guys, the hard boiled detectives always seemed to have either indestructable hats or hats with a lot of character. I guess I'm a bit strange but most of my interest in hats came from reading those old detective stories.

If, and I say if you are indeed strange, it wasnt for that reason.;)

Thanks!! Growing up we never had a TV so movies and shows never influenced my imagination nearly as much as books and comics. My Dad once bought me a bunch of old hard boiled detective novels from a library sale. I had over a years worth of reading!!

Oh, and two more:

The Fed IV-like dark gray fedora William Hurt sports in Wim Wenders' "Until the End of the World" (1991; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Until_the_End_of_the_World). It was the reason I chose a Carbon Grey Fed as my first one.

Also, the Akubra lid that Nicole Kidman has in the cattle drive scenes in "Australia." It was discussed here back in late '08 (was it a modified Squatter?), and revived my interest in hats.

Ho boy! I forgot about those!

Saw this one recently and drooled a little-- would it be classified as simply a Homburg with really high sides?
