Strangers. If I don't know you, I don't want you in my place for any reason. That means if you're a friend of a friend, but I don't know you, then you're staying out on the deck or we're meeting somewhere else.

Other than that, I don't care what people bring in so long as it doesn't cause property damage or get me killed (and so long as they take it back out the door with them). I have a pretty varied (read low-life) group of friends. Some are junkies, some are idiots, some are just fine.

As far as what I would personally bring into my home, I'm pretty open on the issue. Like Edward, I keep copies of books by people with whom I strongly disagree. I like almost all foods. I'm not a picky music/art lover. etc. etc. I guess you could say I don't allow intolerance into my home. [huh]

You may know your friends but you often may not know who their friends are. I've known people who seemed straight-arrow conservative in their appearance and outlook who, unbeknownst to me, also liked to walk on the wild side.

This pretty much says it all for me as well, though I might add "get me arrested" in there with property damage and getting killed.

I think it can be useful to experience opinions contrary to our own. I've known folks who surround themselves only with people who agree on every single thing with them go to pieces in a social situation where they have to deal with someone who doesn't unquestioningly accept their idea of what is "right". Does all of us good to be reminded at times not everyone agrees with us. ;)

One thing I do draw the line at is illegal drug use. Not from a pov of judging those who choose recreational drug use, but from a purely utilitarian angle. As an academic lawyer it would be at best professionally very embarrassing if my house ever was 'busted' and something found (not that there is any reason for the police to come looking for me, but still). At worst, it could have serious repercussions at work.

Pot belly pigs? Depends on what they are served with, after I smoke them on the grill for several hours. :)
I'd say "little brown amazon boxes" but I'd be wrong if my wife were on this site!
Smoking or any tobacco use. I used to use tobacco (snuff) for 16yrs and I'd rather not have it in the house any more, in any form.
A bacon scented candle? I'm familiar with almost all yankee candles, but I don't remember that being listed.

If there's anything verboten in my house, it's the discussion of politics. It does avoid much unpleasantness.

In recent years I've become quite loathe to discuss politics. Even with people who share my views. I readily admit that debate is not something that I particularly excel at. In a social setting if politics is being discussed I'll make my way to the other end of the room so as to avoid the possibility of being sucked into the rhetorical vortex.

That will go on the grill next to my pigs.
The only Yankee I like (unless he's a Met) is Jeter, just seems like a nice guy and in it for the game not the money.
Rue, in my town when you mention pigs or pork, the next thought is what wood it's going to be cooked over, what rub will be used, and for how long. We have a worldwide contest here because of it.
Frilly decorative items, my wife doesn't like them and I'm not fond of them either.
