I think it is overreacting because when somebody states that he/she 'hates something', first, it is nothing but a way of talking. It doesn't mean that he/she really 'hates', it is just that he/she 'dislikes' and we all do know that.

It doesn't mean that he/she 'hates' the owner or that he/she is going to grab a gun and start to kill people. It is not bad kharma or whatever you name all that happy flower stuff.

Next, I do not understand how can be so offensive that you don't like a particular item. I can't believe that people can be so materialist or stuff-centered.

And finally, we are missing the chance of discussing common dislikes and their reasons. When I naively started the "I don't own a..." thread I said that I don't have a pair of jeans. It is just that I don't like them, not that I hate them. Then other members chimed in and stated that they don't like denim. An interesting common fact. What's wrong with discussing this?

Man, I don't think that's the problem.
The jam up - in my way of seeing it - comes when someone states a like of something, or a question about something, then some yahoo comes on and says, "No one looks good in that"..."No one should go out in public like that"... or assigns something else specific and often derogative to the OP. The implication being the OP was foolish for having an opinion, and/or posting on it, and/or harboring it ( the opinion, sentiment, question...) in the first place.

Your thread, subject101, just seemed to me like a Bizzaro reverse bragging thread. Neither here, nor there, but definitely an invitation for lively debate and some ribbing, at least. That's not what concerns me. It's things like: Can I dress vintage with my Uggs?

Obviously the poster owns and enjoys their Uggs, but here come a bunch of jackasses : Eww...Uggs are awful. You should throw them out. Burn them... and so on. I'm paraphrasing, of course - and laughing a good deal. But, as you can see, no helpful advice was offered, even if it's just, Nope, I don't believe you can.

Now that situation I can see a problem with. That is another case of "if you don't like it then move on to something you do." Better that than making a stupid comment.

That, in a nutshell, is the definition of thread-crapping -- whether it's saying "all people who wear jeans are knuckle-dragging barbarians" or "Anybody who talks about a "Golden Era" is a delusional fool, given that everyone then was a violent, sexist, racist McCarthyite." Both of which are sentiments that have cropped up here all too often. It becomes a battle of rhetoric rather than a discussion of ideas.

So, we can either say "well, there's no point of ever discussing any topic beyond 'nice hat' for fear someone might take it personally," or we can try to reclaim obnoxious threads by steering them in a serious, thoughtful direction. Every person posting here has a chance to make that choice -- and every person posting in a thread has a share in determining the direction it takes.

It's all well and good to point out "bad" threads. But what are we doing to make them better?

The I hate threads don't require though. I liken them to fast food. They are easy, popular and offer no nutritional content. Where as a rich content thread requires more thought, insight, and frankly knowledge. You chime into a content thread with the wrong knowledge and you can be proven wrong, whether it be in a civil way or no. That might hurt 'feelings', so why bother?

Discussion can be difficult to obtain, especially when people often just want to be talked at, not educated on any particular topic.

I tend to not care, because I feel flexibility can bring about some of the more interesting discussions - rather than things being run in an 'anal-retentive' manner - where it becomes so rigid that it's suffocating. I tend to be put off by things being run like that...I've noticed that, when it gets to that point, I start rebelling.

Sometimes on YouTube the comments are more entertaining than the video itself. I frequently come across comments of that nature over there, especially on videos about the Golden Era. Here's a comment made by a YT poster that more or less echoes my own sentiments -- though clearly not in a manner in which I would have expressed them.

Everybody comin on these 1920s,30s,40,50s etc clips hatin and what not should just get the (expletive deleted) off. We know those times were not that great, but just because you hate those times does not mean that you have to take your (expletive deleted) anger out on everyone else for simply enjoying the music, dancing and such. Just shut the (expletive deleted) up and leave..oh and quit reminding us that they're dead. WE KNOW THAT ALL READY

Going off topic doesn't worry be too much especially if it is an allied topic or a natural progression from the original thread. Sometimes you get some really interesting and amusing discussion from it.

Saying that I don't want to wade through pages and pages of smiley faces and inane social-networking style chit-chat. Although most of that kind of argle-bargle resides in threads where it is obvious it will be so it's relatively easy to avoid if that annoys members.

And there is also the "ignore" button. If you find a member annoying or their posts of no use or just fluff, ignore them, simple as that.

It's really not that big a deal.

My folks are terrible worryers. Whenever we go somewhere, they come back worrying if they said or did the wrong thing, for days.

Now, these are the people that tell me they've never seen anyone worry as much as I do.

lol Oh come on..... they're fun ..... see-----> :D

I only wonder, because I'm the worryingest worrier ever :p

Yes, but do you worry so much that you might as well live in Worrytown USA? :p

I hate that. I'll go back through threads sometimes looking for info and look at old posts and go "ugh, what the hell was I thinking saying that?!"
