Here is a pair of Caiman/Crocodile Leather Smoke Jumper. 6 Inch High, built on the #461 Last, with Vibram 100 Lug outsole. The upper leather is Black Chrome Excel. Standard Heel Height, Single Midsole, Standard Trim, Black Leather Liner, Black Edge.

No. They break in nicely and in her opinion give a great deal of stability.
So I have to share a positive story about my Whites. Slightly long post.
Those who have a pair of Whites know well how well made they are, but I wanted to share anyway. I tend to wear my Semi dress or my Alden 403 Indy boots as my every day boots. My casual wear is a pair of Khaki or cargo pants with said boots, and a casual button down shirt, long or short sleeve, depending on the weather. So when my wife and I loaded up the kids for a trip to Disneyland this last week, those were the clothes I packed. I am not a sneaker / tennis shoe / gym shoe kind of guy. I wear them for running or other athletic activities, but that is it.
I bought my first pair of Alden 405's back in 2006. I instantly found them to be the most comfortable pair of boots I had ever owned. They were the older cotton lined, very reddish brown style. I wore them constantly, loving the style and comfort, but hating the color. I tried for a long time to darken them using the standard tricks, but never got them how I wanted them. Eventually I sold them. I bought the 403's last summer, and am a lot happier with the color, and have worn them a great deal since then. I thought I had them nicely broken in, and found them very comfortable in the footbed area, although I noticed the leather on the uppers is considerably stiffer than the older ones. Maybe it's the leather liner, or the chromexel leather itself, I don't know. I also bought my Whites at about the same time last year.
First day in the park, I wore the Aldens. We had the park hopper passes, so we walked back and forth between Disneyland and California Adventure. I can walk all day. We tromped all over the parks, having a great time. When we went a few years ago, my youngest was barely 5 yrs old, and I had to piggy back her quite a bit the first day. For the rest of that trip we rented a stroller for her. Now she is 7, and I wasn't renting a stroller for her, figuring she is too old. However, that meant I once again had to carry her piggy back quite a bit. I don't mind, I'm in good physical shape, and just thought of it as good exercise. But at the end of the day, my feet hurt. The stiff leather rubbed against my ankles painfully, and the bottoms of my feet were tender.
Second day in the park, well rested from a good night sleep, we hit the park again. This time I wore my Whites. Again we tromped all over, back and forth. Again, I carried my daughter piggy back for a great deal of the day. This time, at the end of the day, my legs and hips felt very sore from all the excercise, but my feet felt great . The whites were much more comfortable. For the third day, I wore the whites again, and again felt great at the end of the day. On the fourth day, we did some shopping before heading to the airport, so it was substantially less walking. I wore the Aldens again, to give the Whites a rest. I found the Aldens very comfortable for that day, and was happy to have them. I still like the Alden's, I love the style, and they are very good boots. But for the torture test, the Whites proved to be the better boot. I told my wife I am going to have to invest in another pair of Whites. I've been considering a pair of Semi dress Bounty Hunters, and think this pushed me closer to buying them.
Bottom line, if you are considering a pair of Whites, I highly recommend them.

What are those flat pieces of leather with the pinked ends? Are those what I often see on this style of boots, poking out at the bottom of the laces? Do they have a function, or are they wholly aesthetic?

I think they are called kilties and keep the dirt away from creeping up the lacing & the tongue?

They are also called False Tongue. The purpose is to protect the real tongue from abrasion of the laces, and to prevent dirt.

Aha! Thank-you, gentlemen. I've always had mixed feelings about how they look on, but knowing they have a function makes them that bit more appealing, oddly enough.
