Aero leather water resistance

Chrome tanning doesn't effect water repellancy, it is just a cheap & rapid tanning process (as opposed to veg-tanning, brain tanning or oil tanning) which renders the finished hide very supple, so ideal for clothing, footwear & furniture. Some leathers are impregnated with oils & even silicone after the tanning which will offer better water repellancy. If a leather item repels water (beads) & doesn't absorb it, then you can be sure that the surface has recieved some kind of protective finish. If water forms dark splotches on the suface of the leather then the water is being soaked up & is making it's way through the hide..
Not sure what you mean by 'naked cowhide' so I'm pressuming it's suede which are the lower cuts of a hide.

Naked cowhide is a Schott term for cow skin that has no protective top coat - or finish - applied to the leather. Apparently, this type of leather will fully absorb water and other liquids and oddly so, it is supposedly the highest grade leather Schott has on offer.

Naked hide is a pretty common term, Johnson Leathers (my jacket) certainly use it (and Schott, Fox Creek, Brooks) defined as Monitor says. Often full grain and pretty nice stuff. Mine is fairly water resistant despite not having a protective finish. Not sure you're right about chrome tanned leather but if an expert can advise that would be useful. I can only go by experience.

Thanks for clearing that up :D so 'naked leather' is what is known in the leather world as analine leather, premium quality full grain leather & either left undyed or dyed with soluble dyes. They are the best leathers available but are fragile, particually to staining & fading.
Now, who is this Schott ?

Start out right and pronounce it correctly like 'shot' rather than 'scott' like I did forever. :) According to some members' research, some of their historical claims are open to debate.

They make some nice jackets. I like the feel and matte look of the black naked leather, but as said here before it takes a little upkeep if you're going to wear it in the rain. If you're shopping, you can often find new or lightly used jackets for less dough than full retail price on the Schott website.

They make fantastic jackets, but Brando did not wear a Schott in The Wild One - despite that nonsense on the Wikipedia, about it being a 618. I've also been saying 'scott', until I saw this: https://www.schottnyc.com/forum/
'You call the scotts' didn't make much sense to me. lol

Wow. That's the first time I've seen high praise on this forum for Schott in a long time. Usually, it's "mall jacket" assignation for them these days.

You've got 50 years old Schott jackets, without a stitch out of place, going on eBay as we speak. I would think, this fact alone says enough about the quality of the brand - and about the people who claim Schott is 'mall' jackets. I can tell you from personal experience that they make much better motorcycle jackets than most of the manufacturers that are popular on this forum.

This. Rock-solid, performing jackets what I've seen from them.

Oh, I completely agree. I just meant that I seem to constantly see, "Well, they make nice mall jackets," on the forum here. I loved the hide of my Perfecto; it just never looked right on me. I've often thought about ordering a 689H from them, as I love the cut of that jacket.

IMHO, Langlitz makes amazing bikes for motorcycling, but they don't look great off the bike, on the town, etc. Schott makes killer jackets that look and perform great on and off the bike.

Sorry to hijack this thread...

When I first read the name 'Schott' I guessed it was pronounced Scott simply because we spell School and pronounce scool.
Yes they sell mall jackets, or is it that they sell jackets in shopping malls. Schott sell a variaty of styles, traditional and new, to various customer bases. I have not seen their Perfecto styles in malls though, only in specialist bike gear stores.

Rocketeer -- I had a good laugh over your cold-water treatment, as it sounds like I don't know how many days I spent in England. In addition, and as I've reminded folks before, let's not forget Stu at Lost Worlds. His jackets LOVE the rain! You can stand outside in a hurricane in one of those and shake your fist at the sky like Charleton Heston!

It doesn't rain all the time haha just lots, and mostly in the summer! Ask any veteran based in England during WWII ;)

Really? Are Schott padding their resume? I'm honestly shocked.

Pff, Schott's been padding their resume since forever; Brando, Dean, Fonda (Easy Rider), Springsteen, Jett, Vicious... All lies! They are right about the Ramones and Kenny Rogers, though. XD
