Thanks! The hat is constructed from a sewn braid. The crown is stiff like a boater but the brim flexes much like a milan. The rolled edge does a great job of keeping the shape in a gentle roll. It's a very nice piece of hat engineering.

anything with those general dimensions and shapes will almost always be 60s and post ... I would take a guess and say they fall in that category

You're welcome, gents, and thanks for the kind words! I've been working on a new, responsive design for the site for the past month and a half, and it went live just a little bit ago. It's a cleaner interface and navigation, and is designed to look good and be extremely readable on desktops, tablets, phablets, and phones. Even the new lightbox gallery for photos works well on phones. Let me know if you run into any issues with it. The new design makes it easier to update, so I'll be trying to put some more information out there over the coming months.

This arrived yesterday, needed just a little TLC before it's TFL debut.

The embroidered liner:

The sweatband debossments:

This hat must have once belonged to a tag hater, as there are no paper tags at all in it. The liner was still hanging in by a few stitches. There's a little wear on the sweat, but it's still firmly attached and supple.
The felt is beautiful. Long nap, not a whisper of stiffener. Open crown is 6", 2 3/4" felted edge brim. 4.2 oz.
The latter half of the 1940's is my guess as to it's age. Perhaps the Professor can confirm or refute. Either way, this one is going to be a favorite!

1930's Dobbs Grosgrain Tuxedo Fabric Hat (part 1)

Here's a super rare hat that I picked up a few months ago. I know I have seen this type of hat in a vintage advertisement, but I can not for the life of me find the ad.

The entire hat body is made up of gray felt that has been stitched all the way around (similar to a Schoble Spinner). The crown was then covered in a 3 piece super wide black grosgrain. The same type of grosgrain that the black ribbon and bow are made out of. The 3 pieces were stitched together to cover the entire crown. The brim was covered in grosgrain and then spiral stitched all the way around for stability and firmness. The hat firmed up quite a bit when I steamed it, so there must be a good amount of shellac in the felt underneath the grosgrain. When I first received it, the fabric was very limp and would crease with a gently breeze, but now its firm like a standard fur felt hat.

The inside sweatband is really interesting.....the front of the sweatband is a fabric.....probably silk or some sort of acetate. The backside is not leather like other tuxedo hats I have seen. It appears to be a plastic coated cotton or wool. Very interesting.

Hopefully Brad can shed some light as to what this odd hat actually is. I believe its a tuxedo hat, or at least some sort of formal fabric hat. But I could be totally wrong.

Josh, that's the second one of this style to turn up here, though the first was a Cavanagh. You can find the first one here. I have yet to run across what this might be. It's so radically different from a tuxedo hat that I hesitate to call it that. It does have a formality to it. Maybe the ad you were thinking of was the Bunker ad that's posted a few replies earlier in the thread I linked to. It's not the same as the Bunker hat, though. If I ever figure it out, i'll let you know.

Beautiful color and finish on your Game Bird! I agree, it's from 1944 to circa-1950. Too bad about the labels.
