This Beaver Brand hat arrived a while ago and after 10 seconds I decided I don’t like it. I guess it’s a homburg, but the shape just seems wrong. It makes me think of someone who never saw a homburg but had it described to them and then tried to make one. It has all the elements, but it’s just somehow off. I’m sure part is due to my preference for larger proportions (brim and crown).

Just received this one. From the auction photos, I thought this was a Cross Plains, with 3" brim. I was wrong, everything about the dimensions say San Antonio to me.
I researched the original owner, Jack Scott.
Jack was born Sept.4, 1909. He attended school in Cross Plains Texas, until he went to West Texas Military Academy, in San Antonio. He graduated in 1930, and by age 20, was editor of the Cross Plains Review newspaper. By 1940 he owned the entire business. He served in the U.S. Army, 1944 mostly in the Philippines. He was director of the West Texas Press Association, and received 27 statewide awards for his column "Hometowner". He was director of the Citizens State Bank and was involved in oil exploration, and a small cattle operation. He was mayor of Cross Plains four times. He died Jan. 5, 2003.
I am very happy to be the caretaker of his hat, he sounds like an exceptional gentleman. The felt on this hat is very nice!

That is a great Resistol DD I like it and I’m partial to Resistol. If my wife/accountant hadn’t of just been reviewing with me my recent PayPal statement and giving me the “what for”, I would’ve been throwing a bigger loop at that one. Since I didn’t get it I’m glad it went to you. I’m a big enough boy but I am askerdy cat of my wife/accountant she’s tough.

Thanks Yamahana! My wife doesn't give me flack for buying hats, and I don't give her any for buying cowboy boots! It's a win, win situation! She likes my hats and I like her boots!

My wife usually doesn’t either. With her it’s shoes period, I don’t have enough space to own as many hats as she does shoes. But she was right to reign me in a little..I didn’t realize how much I had spent till she brought it to my attention. Wasn’t just hats..Navajo sand-cast buckle, malachite bracelet...but plenty of hats with more still to arrive. I’ve got to try to beat her home every day this week to take care of the evidence after they’re delivered.

Wow, a great one, DD. I'm only about 40 miles from Cross Plains and I go through town often and have all my life. If you ever get a notion to "send that one home", please let me know. Not my size, but it would be a great conversation starter around here.

Other Cross Plains factoids:

The pulp fiction author Robert E. Howard, creator of the character Conan the Barbarian among others, lived in Cross Plains from the age of 13 in 1919 until his death in 1936. His former home in Cross Plains is now a museum. Every year, Cross Plains holds the Robert E. Howard Days and a Barbarian Festival on the second weekend of June.

If you are a Harley rider you probably know of Rick Fairless and Stroker's Dallas. Rick was raised around Cross Plains and his dad still lives there...or at least he did a few years back when I last talked to him.
