Check out Japan Blue... Momotaro’s sister/parent company.

Buy a pair of their jeans from Denimio for the approximate same price as a pair of Gustin, and try to tell me that Gustins are still a good value.
Their stuff looks very nice and I like the fact that they make their jeans and their jackets in larger sizes that would actually fit me. I may give them a try when I buy my next pair of jeans.

Well gents here is a summation from Perth Western Australia.

I have LOTS ( too many !) quality leather jackets , and have to "force" myself to cycle them a different one each day.

A bit of a "first world problem" I know !

Jeans ? I am too wary to buy online ( or wherever) expensive jeans in case they are too squeezy or too big !

I am a consistent Levi 36 waist and 32 or 34 leg. Some OK for suede desert boots , others for heeled Western type boots.

I can buy them used on ebay or Gumtree "no worries" as they say here in Australia , and they will fit !

If I spot an online ( mostly ebay )bargain I will buy them . Just bought 3 pairs of Wrangler "Cowboy" bootcut blue denim.

These were new with Tags/labels affixed. $40/PAIR AND Present like cardboard , like jeans all did when I was a kid.
( I am now 60 !)

I also have just had delivered 2 pairs of Levi 504 "extra black" , used out of Queensland ,and a pair of fawn/beige Wrangler.

These were $20 Australian a pair , and will all be my everyday "work trousers". The blue denim is strictly weekend/evening.

These are 36 waist. All my jeans get washed in as cold water as I can. Gentle machine wash , with ambient temperature "cold" tap water with colour fast type washing powder and fabric conditioner. Followed by a brief cool tumble and line drying in the shade. No direct sun if I can help it.

My favourite jeans since forever were Australian made Levi 604's. Long out of production. FACTORY GONE SINCE 2003.
Both black and blue. Getting very hard to score them used on ebay or Gumtree nowadays. In the mid 90's they were $30 a pair BRAND new from Department stores like Myers or David Jones. ( no ebay or Gumtree back then to complicate things !!)

Just a short question on jeans:

The Levi's 511 is marked as "slim fit" and seems to be low-waist cut. Can anyone tell me, if it's a soft low-waist or middle low-waist?

Thanks, buddys! :)

Just look at their rise measurement i guess, one man mid rise can be another's low rise.

On different subject, since some jeans have very contrasting front and back rise, it seems now my much thicker vegtan leather belt is curving more than another leather belt i have and worn with low rise jeans for ages that stay straight.

Check out their “High Taper” cut. It’s not really a super high waist... most Japanese denim companies have a pretty low rise to the point where most “Western sized” men would prefer a bit more.

A lot of these Japanese companies have started releasing cuts that finally fit well - not only in the rise, but also a nice tapered leg without being skinny. Ex: Japan Blue’s High Taper. Momotaro’s High Taper. Pure Blue Japan’s Relax Tapered. ONI’s Relax Tapered. Samurai’s Relax Taper.

Even most US based selvedge denim companies are revising their cuts from a skinny or standard slim straight... to this type of cut. Ex: 3sixteen’s NT (pretty aggressive), Rogue Territory will be releasing one shortly.

It’s pretty great; because you get room in the top block so your b***s can breathe, you can easily access your smartphone, but you have a nicely tapered lower leg.

I’m curious which fit you like from Gustin?

still weighing whether I should wash my jeans and jacket again, or just air them out from that motor oil smoke smell:confused:

I like their straight fit jeans. They are too baggy at first, but after a couple washes in hot water they fit me pretty well. The rise is OK on these, but I prefer a little bit higher rise. I have three pairs of Ciano Farmer jeans in his 997 “miner fit” cut. Those have a really old-fashioned high-rise which I like, although it probably makes me look (more) like an old man.
Here on the lounge I have learned that we all have different things that we focus on and therefore are willing to spend more or less of our money pursuing. For me jeans fall lower on this list. I have spent many thousands of dollars on jackets of all sorts, and almost as much on boots and leather shoes. When it comes to jeans though, I am reluctant to drop more then $150. I have looked at some of the top-tier jeans in person and they didn’t grab me the way a nice leather jacket for a shiny pair of engineer boots does.
I am intrigued by the high taper cut that you mentioned though, because I like the idea of a high-rise jean with a slightly trimmer fit than the ones I am currently wearing. I also like the style of a lot of the Momotaro stuff that has been posted here recently, I will have to give them another look.

maybe depending on bodyshape, but high rise pants on me, their waistline when worn overtime will just sag to where my hip bone is, and just create more room bellow the crotch, maybe it should be worn with suspender like how people wore them in past era, so I rather wear mid rise pants as they stay in place

Front rise and rear rise really need differentiating. I need a high rear rise because I have a big ass from years of weightlifting, but I wear my jeans on my hips so I need a regular front rise.

When I buy jeans the decision firstly revolves around the ability to fit into the jeans without a ridiculously oversized waist, so they need wide thighs and high rear rise. Second, is there taper, or am I left with a huge leg opening?

Until the last few years I've been stuck with fairly unattractive 'loose fit' jeans. I've also bought a couple of pairs of Iron Heart jeans, that are right in every way aside from the front rise, which is too high in the cuts that otherwise fit me. It's essential I have a 17" rear rise (to avoid builder's bum when sitting), but the difference between the front and rear rise makes all the difference to how well they fit. 17" rear, 13.5" front I at least fit into, but will look baggy on the front as I can't wear the jeans high on that rear number, and also it provides little tilt to the shape. Levi's 541 are the only jean I have EVER found that offer the perfect 11/17 front/rear fit for me at a sensible price and are 98% cotton (never found 100% cotton jeans at any price that fit me). But the quality is horribly indifferent, and the last time I bought two pairs from Amazon the quality stank. The 888s from Iron Heart are almost there for me, with 12.5/17, but combined with their unusually wide hips the poor fitting crotch and hip flare spoil them. Plus the thighs and knees are only just wide enough. Darn it, if Levi's produced acceptable quality every time, or Iron Heart or similar made a proper athletic fit, I could stop this quest for decent jeans.

I work in China, so it's not like I can find anything to try on here that could even theoretically fit. Rear rise on jeans is minute here it seems, with the much smaller derrières the Asian men possess compared to other ethnicities, but peculiarly the front rise on jeans/trousers/shorts is often BIGGER than Western norms. I tried on one pair in my waist size and it had a ridiculous 14.5/14.5 front/rear split. I assumed that was an aberration, but shorts I've tried here love a gigantic front rise- instinctively you want to roll the waist band up to fit, but then you lose whatever rear rise there was.

You just need one of the three Bs to hold them up - Braces, Belt, or Beer-belly! ;)

I hear you - I'm never as aware of being fat (which I currently am) as when I'm here in Beijing. I've never tried to buy trousers here, but I do suspect I'd struggle.

Have you tried Wrangler's Cowboy Cut? They are proper high waisted, very comfy, but the back-front ratio is quite pronounced, might work for you. Mine sit about two inches above my hips in front, on my natural waist, and at the back the top sits right in the middle of the small of my back.

That sounds frightfully complicated.

Yeah some higher rise jeans have that more contrasting front and back rise, my belt is the evidence:D, i leave my belt on the jeans and within 4 months it curves that much.
With higher back rise at least the back pockets are also typically higher too and with bulky type wallet people wear with denim, i at least dont sit on my wallet and hopefully wont give me problem with my spine, thats probably the only benefit for me in higher back rise, as for room at the seat i think it has to do with the curve on pattern for the center vertical seam, even with high back rise my jeans dont have much room for bigger butt, i have a low rise mall jeans with more room for the seat but they tend to look baggier/ saggier on the ass when we stand than my raws.

I’ve never quite understood what athletic fit means. Surely most athletes are supposedly lean and can fit in standard cuts pretty well.

Ok, I found out, that the waist on Levi's 511 differs from colour to colour. German retailers are so kind to mark the differences. The most 511 are "middle-waist", but some colours are specially marked as "low-waist".
So, I will try the lower ones the next days in department store, because I want one for summertime. :)

PS:
I wash my jeans just regular as marked on the care tag.

Again, the "High Tapered" type of fit I'm describing isn't exactly that high..... comparing to a pair of trousers from the 1930s, for example. It's not remotely close to that type of 'high.'

I also don't picture that high, just for me high rise pants doesn't work it doesn't taper enough to my waist size, I wear size 28 or 29 and the waist on the higher cut is loose on me yet my hip bone is hurting and making the front pocket useless it won't sag on those size but it is not comfortable pants, when I wear size 30 the waist is impossibly loose and the pants sag while size 30 mid to low rise fit perfect and stay in place , for it to work maybe it either needs a cinchback or worn with suspender, I do plan to MTO double knee workpants with cinch back.

I'll have to check those out- thanks for the tip!

I forgot to mention that while jeans veer towards parity on front-rear rise numbers, off the peg suit trousers I used to buy when I was younger always had a pronounced front-rear rise difference and fit nicely. I buy tailored suits now, but the trousers (unlike the jacket) remain identical to my old ones. It did, however, become harder to buy off the peg trousers that fit as trends swung towards a skinny fit, leaving me few options that fit my thighs.
