Hats and Drinks - A Match Made in Heaven

^^^^^ I hear you on the day-drinking! After moving piles of brush all morning I retreated to the spring-fed creek with a cooler of PBRs. Oh...and this Jos.A.Bank “straw” hat.

Grilling breakfast this morning - deer sausages, venison steaks and breakfast potatoes and rhubarb tarts for my wife and her morning guests. My grilling beverage is a Dangerous Man IPA (blueberry milkshake IPA). This is the last of a growler purchased 2 weeks ago. It is not at it's best this morning. A trip to the brewery is needed.

When my wife and her guests head out to ride horses in a while will be my opportunity to stock up on refreshing beer. A clean tasting beer and then something else.

Best, Eric -

I find with most beers in a quality growler with the bail lid will last abt a wk refrigerated. Beers that are heavily nitrogenized will start to fall off before then. Once opened the beer will only be at its best for abt 2 days. With a 64 oz growler you're only talking about a little more than 4 beers anyway, depending on your glass size.

I have a stainless steel growler with screw-in lid that won't last that long so I really only use it when I need 2 growlers.

Jack I have not invested in a stainless growler yet. The glass growlers provided by my local brewers have been de rigueur. I have been enjoying the growler stored beer for a week or more. I will pay closer attention to the "more exotic" beers and their taste over time. The summer light beers (more water, less taste), to me, last long time.

I agree with the nitrogenized beers. Quick shelf life. That is an effective marketing/packaging characteristic.

HJ, I was wondering if you or anyone around here had tried one of the pressurized growlers?
Never seen one in use, BB. None of the brewpubs or retailers around here would have a way to pressurize it. Seems to me that would be more like a pony keg. What you really need to do to prolong freshness in the growler is remove the air. I like the pretty Copper though.

Eric, the 64oz glass growler from Granite City is really better than the stainless steel ones. GC sells stainless also but mine didn't come from there. All of the stainless growlers I have seen have too big of a mouth with a screw-in cap & they let too much air in.

If you have a GC Brewpub near you around the holiday season they usually have a sale when you can buy a new 64 oz growler filled with your choice of their beers for $20 or $25. Their normal everyday fill price is $10 & they frequently run specials of $5 fills, $8 fills for their Batch 2000 Double IPA. I'll probably buy another growler this coming holiday season. They have real nice aluminum handles on their glass growlers.

PS: I should add that around here retailers will fill any approved growler, not just ones they sell. Liquor store prices for fills run from $9.99 to $28.00, depending on the brew. There is a Stump Coffee Porter or Stout which I haven't tried yet, which is at the top end. I paid $21 on sale from $24, for the Curmudgen's Better Half to try it this past wk. Liked it but would probably only do it again on special occasions or holidays.

BB, when I saw this yesterday I thought it probably had a pump like a pony keg thru a fitter on the top. Last night I read thru some of the links & know now it uses CO2 tablets. I would have no need for something like that, especially at $200.00. I don't plan on taking a growler mountain climbing or hiking the Appalachian Trail as suggested. Or even on a picnick; most picnick sites around here are posted "No Alcohol" anyway.

What I was thinking about when I bought mu stainless steel growler was breakage & cleanliness. But I rinse my glass one out thoroughly with fresh tap water several times after each fill, & brewpubs like GC will dunk it in their sanitizer anytime I ask them to. And I haven't broken one yet. It suits my needs.

I did the same, HJ. Looks to be something marketed toward the hipsters. Most beers I buy wouldn't be around long enough for such a purchase.

True enuf Boots! The idea sounds good but after reading all the info and seeing prices, can't see me jumping into this. I'm kinda lukewarm on all the micro-brews anyway and really have a hard time with all the hoppy, tutty fruity, summer/autumn/winter brews, etc. Reckon it's just my lowbrow upbringing with good ole' Stroh's and Black Label. Did however find one in particular do indeed like. Country Boy Brewing (http://countryboybrewing.com) outa Georgetown, KY makes a fine American Blond Ale called "Cougar Bait". Problem is seems so popular, Mullin's 1847 Restaurant, a favorite tavern in Moorefield, WV can hardly keep a keg on tap! :(

Sounds as if we grew up in the same neighborhood. PBR is my go to. I'll keep a look out for the Cougar Bait.

Arrived home this morning after some all night travels. Staying on schedule with a dog soiree, yard chores and fixing breakfast. The slowly climbing 70'f morning temps with very high humidity have me feeling whooped. Going to sit on the dock with an early morning beer - All Day IPA (Founders).

You folks have mentioned before "day drinking" - this is early morning drinking.

Cheers, Eric -

A trade has me being able to sample a Stone IPA. It appears frequently on the "popular rating sites" as in the top 3 IPA's offered in the US. I do really like this beer after the first bottle. It has a well balanced taste between the hops, malt, citrus and piney tastes. Todays warm and humid conditions affect my preferences and it rocks today. I will work thru my 6 pack the next weeks. This will not be hard work.

Today I take my hat off and lift a drink of TN whiskey to the friend of a friend. I will never know this man yet I know those that did gathered today to share their memories of him as someone they loved. He has family and friends that will not get over this loss but they will move on. That's what we do. To him and them, I lift this drink.

May his memory always bring you blessings.

Many, if not most of us have been there and if we live long enough we'll see it more than enough.

To my friends,
