I've been searching for my first Homburg to join the Nation, and I ran across this Pre-Stetson Mallory derby that looks excellent, and has the original box. I've also been looking for a Pre-Stetson Mallory, so this could kill two birds with one stone if I can turn it into a Homburg.

What do the Homburg experts think ? Would it take a crease like a Homburg ? Looks like it already has a little dent in the top.

Definitely looks very homburg to me. Maybe it was just left with an open crown? That would leave make very versatile. Is the crown soft or hard?

Looks fantastic... by the way.

Best,
Joe.

Not sure, it’s on an auction site, so I only have photos. I guess I can send an inquiry.

For some odd reason the liner and ribbon bow make it more derby to my otherwise inexperienced eyes. A front picture showing the block shape might help to clarify this. Nevertheless a nice hat!

I'm not at all convinced that's a Homburg, in fact I'm sure it isn't. No amount of creasing will really make it one either. It's one great looking Mallory derby though. I'd buy it as is and wear it so.

I agree with you, Panos. The shape of the brim too says Bowler to me.

Lets chip in and help him buy it so then we can discern who is correct. I am intrigued now and want to know. But I guess if he just discerns if it is a hard shell or soft bashable shell that is a good tell.

I will take your word for it Steve! You definately are one of the derby/bowlers experts (among others) around here ;)

It's a softer hard shell derby that's got a dent in it. It can be "bashed" but it's not bashable.

Thanks for all the input guys. The seller responded and said it is a hard crown, so I assume it’s not a Homburg. It is nice though, so I’ll see if I can talk her down a little.

Have my eye on a Cavanagh too that for sure is a Homburg, so maybe I’ll get both !!
Good luck, Hagwood. A Mallory Derby and a Cavanagh Homburg in one swoop would be very nice.

I have a Homburg for sale in the classifieds here on FL: https://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/rockel-homburg-hat-sz59-45usd.99104/

Please be patient and correct me if I'm mistaken about it being a Homburg. It has the characteristic gutter dent in the crown, but it doesn't have a pulled-in brim edge. And a rope band instead of a ribbon. But a Homburg was the closest thing I could identify it with.

You all can see pics on Google Photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/rjnDtPRthLhTmFyf7
Although sold in a shop in Bad Homburg and shaped similar to a Homburg, it isn't one. It's what's known as a trachten style hat. Google trachten hat for more. Hope that helps.

Thank you Steve1857. I’ll correct the ad. I agree it’s a trachten style hat. I’m of German heritage and own a few trachten hats. Specifically the Tirolerhut (Tirolean hat) variety. My favorite is a Zapf I bought in Austria!

I apologize for hijacking this Homburg thread! Cheers!
