Panama Hat Thread

I know it’s November, but I finally decided to see what could be done with this Panama hat I acquired. The crown was low with a deep crease and the brim was a big floppy mess. After seeing how Bill @Bill Hughes curled the brim edge on his Panama a gave it a go. I reblocked it and then hand creased it and curled the brim edge. It came out better than I expected.

You have done an excellent job with that Panama, really impressive. I too know that it's November, but when I saw the sunshine, cold though it is, out came the Panama.

This is my second hat from Montecristi Custom Hat works in Santa Fe. They know how to make a nice hat!

The crown is 4 7/8” at the front and 4 3/4” at the back. The brim is 4” wide.

It’s a huge size, too big for my hat measuring device to measure. Without any shims it fits nice and gentle, but I’ll add a single shim to the back to keep it in place in a breeze. Thanks again, Bill, it’s a terrific hat!

This is my second hat from Montecristi Custom Hat works in Santa Fe. They know how to make a nice hat!

The crown is 4 7/8” at the front and 4 3/4” at the back. The brim is 4” wide.

It’s a huge size, too big for my hat measuring device to measure. Without any shims it fits nice and gentle, but I’ll add a single shim to the back to keep it in place in a breeze. Thanks again, Bill, it’s a terrific hat!

Believe you me, there are those of us with a seriously large hat size. My seven and three quarters translates to sixty two cm in metric. Using metric if buying from outside the UK gets it right. For some reason there's a variation in US & UK sizes of the same quoted dimension. The times I have seen, "click for size," only to find XXL to be sixty-one cm.

Generally the bodies of straw are stretched by 1 or 2 cm to reach 61 cm or 62 cm, anything over 60 cm is made to order, if you want the exact size must be woven in a hat block with the appropriate measure.
As the blocking is made on Italian machines (Giuseppe Michelagnoli) and from other European countries, we work with cm, we can block hats from 54 cm to 64 cm.

That's an interesting insight, thank you. My straw Biltmore was made in the USA, it gives a size of seven & three quarters, or sixty two cm. Had I ordered it as a UK seven and three quarters it probably wouldn't fit.
My Equador made Panama, is also a sixty two cm. But I bought it here in the UK from a milliner, that had sixty two cm, as a UK seven and three quarters. It does get confusing.

Reminds me when I had a similar problem getting a jock strap when I played Rugby, I wasn't complaining either.

Thanks, Ryan. You know what it’s like trying to find nice hats when you have a big head. Bill sold me this hat for way below market value too; he’s a class act.

Exactly so Bob. But what I find is that if I buy a seven and three quarters here in the UK, they translate that as sixty two cm. Then again, if I buy from the US, as I did with the Biltmore, they too translate seven and three quarters as sixty two cm. That's why it gets so confusing and it's why I don't have a similar collection of hats as most of you have. Not only do I have a cranium that is a tad larger than life, getting the right hat size is easier said than done.
