1913 would have been the yr Begay & John Wetherill guided Zane Gray on their second expedition (Gray's first) to the Natural bridge in Utah.

Seeing the photo of Zane Grey made me remember my grand mother told me her father [my great grand father AP Dodd] loved Zane Grey. He would read his books over and over.
She also told of the time he got to see the Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. I believe in 1895 in Birminham Alabama.

Great pics, Rusty. My maternal Grandfather was a Zane Grey fan and used to sit under the shade of a ********* walnut tree in the afternoons and read. From my pre teens to my early teen years, he would have a large paper grocery sack full of Grey novels and a few others for me to take home when I came to visit. I used to sit under that tree and read with him. I still enjoy western novels to this day.

Great stories & memories Rusty!

It's been some yrs ago now but I bought some programs, posters, etc from an elderly man who had ran away from home at age 12 or 13, & found his way to the 101 Ranch where he was hired as a stable hand. He made the ranch his home & eventually worked his way to being a performer in the Wild West Show.

And I have often thought of what it must have been like for Richard Wetherill in 1888 to ride up the ridge to a clearing & look across the canyon to see the ruins of Cliff Palace, the first human to set eyes on it in 800 yrs.

Burt Mossman as a teenager in El Paso, TX. He grew up to be one of the last of the legendary lawmen in New Mexico & Arizona.

Dr Joseph Medicine Crow, Baakkáa Dákaakaash, was a member of the Whistling Water clan, Bilikóoshe. He was born 27 Oct 1913 in Lodge Grass, MT. He is the son of Leo Medicine Crow and Amy Yellow Tail. Every individual has a desire to be remembered for something great. We want to be seen as someone who has truly made a difference, and seek to be known as more than average. We aspire to live a life like Dr. Joseph Medicine Crow.

He passed to the other side of the camp Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the age of 102. He was the Crow’s last war chief and the sole surviving link to a long military tradition. Despite the hardships he faced being raised on the Crow Reservation in the early 20th century, he lead by example and succeeded in every aspect of his life. He was determined to show all people, not only his own, that Native Americans had the potential to achieve anything they desired. He proved that Native Americans are capable of greatness while still remaining true to their heritage and strong upbringing.

He understood that legacy isn't only about recording one’s achievements, it is also about bequeathing knowledge and experiences gained through life’s unpredictable journey." And "As a historian, his expertise was in the Battle of Little Bighorn and he was the "last living person with a direct oral history from a participant" of the battle, according to the U.S. National Park Service. Medicine Crow's grandfather, White Man Runs Him, was a scout with General George Custer, who died during the battle in 1876.

In 1948, Medicine Crow was appointed Crow Tribal Historian and Anthropologist, and he was later declared the last Crow War Chief. In order to earn the title of War Chief, Medicine Crow had to undertake four tasks, which he did during World War II: touch an enemy without killing him; steal a horse; lead a successful war party; and disarm an enemy.

He was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009 and was nominated for the Congressional Gold Medal. Medicine Crow was the first person in his tribe to earn a master's degree, which he received in anthropology from the University of Southern California in 1939."

Dr. Thomas B. Hale, taken Christmas Day 1862.

Early in the war Dr. Hale was recruited by Thomas Coleman Younger as a guerrilla fighter & doctor. He was known as Cole's doctor. He treated all their wounds & sickness but it is unknown what his medical education might have been.

Hale was among 9 men who were captured & summarily executed by Kansas Red Legs on February 7th, 1863. His tombstone is marked February 8th in error & does not say he was a doctor.

That 1900 -1920's hat style obviously goes back a lot farther.

This one made me laugh.....interesting group.....sure wish I knew the back story!!!!!
And that hat in the middle....what the heck!?!?!?!?! I wonder if he generally wore it brim down (and up brimmed it to be photographed) to shade his eyes further as he also appears to wear "Syphilis" glasses......Syphilis made the eyes sensitive to light.......people often confuse these for early sunglasses which in a way they were I guess.......
