The suit from the Deutsche Demokratische Republik. 1980s, I guess.

My partner once bought from an estate shop in Rhode Island a pinstripe navy wool suit that had belonged to Humphrey Bogart. Reportedly, Bogart had a summer place in eastern Rhode Island or nearby Massachusetts. Tonight I decided to try it on. It would fit really well if I were to lose some weight. Not too bad regardless. Apologies for the two-day growth of beard; I meant the photos to be taken tomorrow, but Lorain decided to take them now.

love this suit Michael, would it be 40s?

Thanks Michael. It's possible it's 40s. There are no marks in it at all, so I think it was made by a local tailor sometime in the past.

Michael

My gut says late 40s. While I own patterns for female suits, there's still a similarity in tailoring flavor. I have a very specific taste in 40s tailoring. I'm comparing it to the cut that [I see here], on the left.

I got this one at a local Goodwill. I found the three pieces all separated, in the pants/jackets/vests sections of the store. It was an exciting feeling putting it all together, and it felt even better when I found out that it fit! It's wool, made by Hart Schaffner & Marx. Tag says it was made December 22nd, 1977. I think the wide lapels make it look similar to a 1930s style suit. Would anyone agree? I'm curious to hear thoughts. I'm hoping I can use a late 20th-century suit to pull off an early 20th-century look.

Looks good on you man. A lot of those 70's era suits (when they weren't made of horrible polyester) had quite a lot of recycled 1920s-1930s influence in them- wide lapels, three piece etc. Films like the Great Gatsby and Chinatown I think were quite influential on menswear at the time. The key when thrifting is to find the ones with quality fabrics!

Thanks! I am very fond of it. The suit was made by a Polish tailor and master cutter, Józef Błoński

The lining is 100 % silk from Błoński stock, the outer fabric is https://www.magee1866.com/en/Brown-Salt-and-Pepper-Flecked-Donegal-Tweed/m-12760.aspx
Looks great. Very nice cut and lovely fabric. I'm a big fan of the plain weave Donegals.

Great fabric an nice cut - very 20ish with the long silhoutte.

That's exactly was in my mind - to recreate silhouette of '20 slim "jazz suits".

But in my opinion the jacket isn't long. It is normal! Modern "fashion" jacket of Zara of H&M are just short, too short, they don't even cover your buttocks completely. Longer vintage jackets looks more natural and follow natural proportions of human body.

I completely agree with you, but as a wearer of various 30s suits,
where even the jacket does not always cover the bottom, I still say "long". ;)
