Aero for cold winters

Hi All,

My first post on TFL so here goes...

I already have a stunning AERO custom board racer HH and I love it so much. Highly recommend buying custom if anyone is unsure. The service is excellent and the leather quality incredible.

I now want a winter version as I want to wear leather when it’s cold. It’s an all year round thing for me. Has anyone got a winter lining option in an Aero? I’d love to know what people think and if any advice?

There are a few decent options for linings that do well in colder weather.

First, shearling. This is the warmest you can get. It's a very expensive upgrade, but nothing else can touch it. The downsides of shearling is that the wool can be a pain to clean, and that it can be too warm for anything but the coldest weather, and that it adds a significant amount of bulk to the jacket at the full 25mm depth. You can try for 12.5mm or 18mm, I think, which might make for a somewhat more versatile and slimmer shearling jacket. Look at the B-3, ANJ-4, and Irvin jackets. If you're not into a vintage military aviation look, then consider the Blizzard or the Thunder Bay. But you can get a shearling lining in most of the styles they offer, and I think it works nicely in their 50's Half-belt, Half-belt deluxe, Highwayman, and Hercules styles, possibly others as well.

Next, quilted. Rayon with wool batting. It certainly looks nice, and I think it would keep you pretty warm. I haven't tried it myself, but I imagine it's a lot like other quilted jacket insulation that I've seen in winter jackets firsthand.

Then, alpaca. The alpaca lining does give a decent amount of insulation, but not too much more than the standard wool or cotton drill.

Most customers do not find that the wool tartan linings add a significant amount of warmth to the jacket, and I surmise that they are not intended to. But you might find that there are heavyweight linings that are more for this purpose available, if you ask for it specifically.

The other option is just to find a style that Aero offers which is cut generously enough to allow for layering beneath, and just wear a good thick sweater or vest when it's cold. That may be the best option.

A thin, battery-powered heated vest, or jacket, will change your life. I need to invest in another one after selling mine years ago. Some are not inexpensive, but they sure work. Unless you are looking for a specific extreme cold-weather jacket, imo this option is the most versatile.

When it's cold, nothing beats a shearling jacket.
I had a HWM lined with shearling and now the CC. I love the dry warmth that the jacket gives. In the shopping center it quickly becomes too warm, even if I leave it open and only have a thin shirt underneath. lol
For me there is nothing better.

What is winter like where you live? Will you consistently get temperatures way below 0 Celsius? Or is winter where you live more like 10 Celsius? That should influence what lining you need during winter.

Guppy’s post is right on the money, considering Aero linings. The only thing i disagree with is concerning the alpaca lining, I have two jackets (grizzly and B-10) with alpaca and I think it is seriously warm. Not as warm as quilted or shearling of course, but significantly warmer than a tartan or cotton lining.

Another thing I want to mention is that if you go with Aero for a winter jacket, CXL isn’t the best leather choice. There’s a lot of oil stuffed into that leather, which tends to become really stiff and cold when exposed to cold weather. A bit like wearing a wet jacket imo.

Honestly though, I think leather is a crap material for a winter jacket (a thick shearling being the exception). The only thing it does is stop the wind. It doesn’t keep you warm. I’ve pretty much given up on trying to make leather work when it’s cold. When it gets seriously cold (sub zero) I almost always go with my wool pea coat.

(Almost) No leather in real cold conditions here, sometimes layering the HWM with a thinner sweater like an Aero Donegal and long sleeved Tee.

Around zero Celsius it’s Rymhart Cardigan, Schott Nixon or layered Strellson short coat or Carhartt Chore Coat.

Further below zero it’s a N-1 or a Carhartt Arctic Traditional Coat (layered if necessary).

Cheers

I purchased a light weight shearling from ELC, a D-1 jacket, has two pockets that cover phone & wallet and though warm isn’t enough to cook me when I wander into the mall...I believe Aero make a D-1 too

I think the nail on the head in the replies is what is cold. If it is 0c/32f you have many options. If it is -10c/15f a heavier shearling is the only way to go. With that, in my opinion, it has to be one of the military repros because the sheepskin is very flexible and won’t stiffen in the cold. D1/B6 being the most practical. They won’t cook you and leave room to layer. That said, they do make a statement and are not everyone’s cup of tea. You will get at least 1 “where’s your airplane” comment.
Secretly, below 12f i turn in my TFL card and wear a down puffer.

My wife has already told her friends I’m picking up a spitfire after Christmas.

I own a couple of "winter" Aero's: a B-3, a shearling lined LHB in FQHH, a tweed lined Teamster in Badalassi and an Alpaca lined Mariner.
- the shearling B-3 is obviously the warmest of all. However it is bulky and I find it too warm for the dutch winter (which the past few years is quite mild due to the global warming). Furthermore, if you get caught in the rain, then the shearling will feel like a wet labrador.
- the shearling lined LHB is quite warm, less in the sleeves as they are corduroy lined. If you go for a shearling lining: add an inch on sleeve and back length as the thick lining tends to lift up the whole jacket. Don't go for CXL FQHH as you'll get a really heavy jacket that tends to get stiffer at cold. Make sure the shearling lining covers as much of the body as possible (my LHB is 2/3 shearling lined and 1/3 cord). Get a mouton collar as well.
- Alpaca and tweed lining: almost similar (tweed being a bit warmer) but not really warm.

I'd recommend heavier layering rather than heavier lining though. Then you'll get to use your jackets for a longer period throughout the year.

What's your size?? I have an Aero Longshoreman FQHH Shearling lined I've picked up in the last couple of years and never worn. I need to list it soon.

Late to the party, that one has come and gone. Purchased in person from TFL Powersci. I liked it, but was always hung up that it was a little big and I just felt a tad self conscious in it. I just feel better in my deck jacket which covers the same temp range. I regularly spend time wanting an Eastman B6 but try and remind myself of the lesson of the pictured Aero.
