Five Star Leather Jackets

I had a short email exchange with Shawn, he's up for recreating the 24MJZ. It will probably be a bit before I make all the decisions on my end, since I want to be sure that it's really something I'd wear enough.

I hate to ask a redundant question, but since there are now 91 pages on this thread and I wouldn't know where to start reading: any recommendations for the hide? I've seen some good things said about the goatskin, but I'm curious how it fades. I like goatskin for the G-1's I've owned, but it never really seems to fade that well - always looks pretty new, and very uniform. Although that's probably intentional with military issue jackets.

A couple of things on this. It really hasn't been time to see how any of this material holds up with wear. We will know more in a year or three. Most goatskin people know is chrome tanned and this stays new looking for ages. That said, the Five Stars goat (I have had 4 jackets) is different, maybe it's the drum dyeing process they use. Most of it is less shiny too. It does scratch and discolor and the topcoat does wear faster than most goat I've seen. Not enough to show up in a photo but enough for it not to look vulgarly new for too long.

As stated previously I’ve asked Shawn to make my black Type 3 in deerskin because I want a light summer jacket and having read up on deerskin, it’s supposed to be very abrasion resistant & I’m hoping it doesn’t mark up / ‘fade out’ too quickly. I like goat on my 5* G-1 (imagine it will age slowly) but if I wanted another Trucker I’d be tempted by horse hide based on my experience of a HH A-2 I had that marked up and faded a treat developing loads of character.

I have two denim jackets, a faded out light blue type 3 Levi and an immaculate dark blue early 20th Century repro by SJC. Depends on my mood whether I want smart dark blue or ‘banged out’ laid back light blue.

Unboxed this morning! Here are some lit shots, not much sun today. I’ll post fit pics in the jacket O’ the day thread when I run to the post office later this am. This goat is entirely different than the seal brown on my other jacket. No squeak, more of a matte finish like the black one. A bit heavier. All in all really nice. The new tag and red liner are sweet!

Any suggestions as to leather for a Californian half belt. Nothing stiff, light in weight and shows wear quick. Try to make the surrogates jacket.

I doubt that Shawn has a leather that looks like the jacket in the photo.
The color will also be difficult to match.
It is also difficult when the jacket has to look worn quickly.
I would send Shawn the photo and ask what he would suggest.

Agree. Depending on the photo, the jacket is a dark brown verging on burgundy (cordovan?) and it is a beaten up 70 years old. I guess the dark brown steer-hide would achieve that look. The distressed stuff looks fake as. At one point that jacket was new. I would simply settle for that.
