She may very well be interested in an 80 year-old jacket considering she is now 95 and started riding 79 years ago! Her name is Gloria Tramontin Struck... a legend.

These offerup.com posts are killing me - I’m blocked from seeing them by the website (probably as the website is aimed at USA only) which is all rather tantalising given my cal search is long and fruitless so far...

But also probably just as well, given I doubt these local sellers would be happy to ship to the EU. Nor first answer all the questions on condition and sizing I’d need to ask, given that postage/import costs make even a comparatively cheap jacket a less cheap and somewhat risky proposition to import here without a good idea of condition/fit first...

Anyway, as a change of pace to tantalisation by offerup, I link to a rather more expensive and no doubt far riskier proposition on the buyee.jp site which of course has its own Russian roulette vibe, given you can’t really ask questions and thst easy returns and financial protections seem rather lacking...

Anyway here’s an interesting old block bilt chips style jacket I came across. A nice looking jacket you don’t see often (or at least I have rarely seen block bilt jackets up for sale). Also might be of some academic interest comparing it to old cal jackets, given debates about links between block bilt and cal. Though I think the experts (I’m certainly not one, or even a gifted amateur) have debunked that idea now as incorrect?

Anyway you can certainly see some similarities, but also differences in the pictures...

That’s a very cool and inspirational article, thanks for posting! I’m not likely to trouble her record for years riding, but I’m going to give it a good go! I bet she wishes she’d hung onto some of those old Indians, they’d make for a wealthy retirement!

Anybody know anything about these Japanese brands. There's multiple listings of same jacket (different sizes, colors, etc.). They sure look cool from the photos. Price isn't great, but not bad either assuming it's a quality product. Not sure what the actual brand is though.

Edit: Actually, I found this. I think these are Toyo because the name is mentioned in a couple places in the listing. But I can't make out the labels. This could be a great deal as it's the parent company of Buzz Rickson and Sugar Cane.

Block Bilt jackets do not show up too often. I bought one in Japan and I have seen this jacket. They made a variety of outerwear much of it leather.

I am not familiar with links between Cal Leather and Block. This particular Block is from around 1940. Can you say what is the Debate?

I share your curiosity. There is a flood of jackets from Japan on ebay. You will find even more on yahoo Japan. Many of them look great. There are so many other brands in Japan I am lost. The competition there at all price ranges.

I have been tempted by some "off" brands in Japan, but they don't do much in my size. Some look very interesting.

We won't know the quality until someone show up with one here.

I clicked on the seller name and it pulled up like 1500 listings of various knock off jackets including J100s, Cossacks, D Pockets, pretty much any famous style from the past 80 years, etc. They sometimes go up to like 5 or 6 XL which basically translates to like a 44 or 46 LOL. In a few of them I was able to make out the brand name and they seem to have a few different brands. One I could clearly see and did a search here and found "Cidu" which is a Chinese company. Not sure if the seller lists multiple brands or if it's one manufacturer putting out different labels. There are various price points for the jackets from like $150 all the way up to like $800ish for "Horween".

I can't figure out the "Toyo" connection. I'd have no problem paying/experimenting $400 for a Toyo affiliated product. But it's a little vague as to what you're actually buying depending on the jacket.

I can’t testify to the quality but I would also check out reb_bel on Instagram. They resell those jackets and speak English to some extent if you want to take the dive.

Here’s one thread on them:

If you search Taobao on the Lounge you’ll find some reviews of other Chinese jackets.

many thanks. this was helpful. I got excited for a sec when I saw a reference to Toyo which is the parent company of some of those higher end brands. But it's not clear if there is in fact a relationship. $400+ is too much of a risk. You can buy used Vansons and Schotts in that range. But yeah, they do market the jackets well with the info about the tanning, etc.

Yes. Those are all Chinese jackets you can find on Taobao. The Toyo or RM on the heading is purely search engine marketing because Toyo enterprise is probably the biggest repro manufacturer in Japan.
