Akubra Overload

The Fedora model has reportedly been discontinued. If I had gotten one earlier I would have probably wound up with a couple of more. I always thought they looked a little small in photos but it is at least as big as a modern stratoliner.

That's too bad, it's a nice hat. The Fedora was the first OC hat I bought and it languishes in a box right now because I don't wear it as much. While the brim is 2.5", I find the crown to be shorter and more tapered than a Strat.

I reblocked my Akubra Sombrero. 6" straight sided crown and flattened the brim which gives me 4 1/2" front and back and 4 1/4" on the sides. I'm debating shaving it all down to 4". I'll be putting a slight dip in the brim and my standard pinched telescope/teardrop for the crown. Maybe redo the kettle curl? I know this brim will be floppy once it softens up again so a kettle curl would keep it from slapping me in the face on a windy day.
Gotta put a sweat in and come up with something for a hatband.
You can see the shadowing from the sun, the old kettle curl kept the edge of the brim out of the sun so it didn't fade as much.

I finished up my Akubra Sombrero. It turned out pretty nice. My intention was to make it a knock around summer shade/rain hat. The proportions are a little exaggerated to accommodate any shrinkage or taper that might occur. The killer of a lot of my hats is the taper that happens after a few years of wearing in the weather. The crowns end up looking too small so having a large, almost reverse taper crown to start, and add to that the fact that this hat has already seen several years of sun and rain, it should maintain a decent shape for a long time. Probably for the life of the felt.
I'm not a huge fan of Akubra's Superfine felt but this took on a fairly ok finish considering.

Just recieved my Akubra Kiandra Hat in Loden, It's more of a western style than any hat I own but I have had my eye on this hat for a long time and I'm so glad I got it. Naomi & Trudi at Hatsdirect were great to deal with and truly make the difference when choosing a retailer.
Now I can once again tell my wife that my hat collection is complete and I won't be needing a new hat again. Lol

Nice style and colour. We will need a head shot of that one. I was thinking of that model and colour but got lured away to the Coolabah and the croc band.
Wear it in good health

I asked David Morgan when they were going to have the Campdraft in stock, this was the reply:

“That's a good question. We originally expected April but since they have
not shipped yet April isn't going to happen. Hopefully May or June.

Sorry I cannot be more specific.”

Just thought I’d share in case anyone else was interested.
Thanks. I’ve been wondering that myself. I’ve checked their site a couple times the last 2 months, but haven’t asked them. I’m wanting to get a new silver belly Campdraft to put in Cattleman and was waiting until DM got them.

The more I wear the Akubra hats I have recently obtained the more I like them. They are all Campdrafts and all extremely comfortable and seem to be of really good sturdy material and workmanship. I have really enjoyed them. It gets hotter than hell where I live in the spring and summer so I will probably have to shelve them soon until fall. I have worn one or the other almost daily since I got the first one and am gonna miss them for several months.

Yes, I seem to be reaching for my CD, perhaps out of laziness as many of my hats are in boxes and this one is left out. I am finding that the Akubra is my antidote for vintage hat acquisition syndrome! Been putting a bunch of vintages on Ebay that I'll never really wear so why keep?

Hello all,

New to the lounge here and a recent owner of a Campdraft in Bluegrass Green and a Bushman in Nullarbor Tan. I do have a question about the Campdraft though. Has anyone here experienced spidering of the felt where it's creased? It basically looks like creased cardboard but much finer. I know that the felt on the CD is finer than what's used for the Bushman but I was surprised as I have never seen this in any of my other fur felt fedoras and a bit disappointed because if I change the bash, the fine creases will be visible.

Other than that I'm loving the wide stiff brims and tall crowns. Sad that both models have apparently been discontinued as they are such a great value for wide brim open crown hats! I'm curious what they will replace them with?

Welcome to the lounge. I am glad to hear you are enjoying those hat. I know I love my Akubras and my oldest being from 2003 ish I know you will get years of use out of them.
I can’t recall a spidering when creasing mine but if you give it a hit of cold water I am sure you can work them out. I remember others mentioning the same issue but can’t remember what they said to fix it. Sooner than later someone will chime in.
As for them being discontinued. I think they are a vendor made to order item now. HatsDirect doesn’t seem to be liquidating yet. If they are I will be disappointed. It’s one of the hats I wish I had in my collection. Good working class style.
Welcome to the lounge again and wear your hats in good health.

Welcome to the Lounge. I have 8 Campdrafts and 3 Bushman hats and I've experienced this effect on a couple of hats. If I remember correctly, both were Campdraft Deluxe (Heritage grade felt). I used johnnycanuck's method of water/massage successfully on one. The other l left alone and the spider-webbing just went away in a few weeks as the felt got used to its new shape.
