I agree. Moving to a 'subscription' model is not the answer as that would eliminate so many 'hat curious' folks or lurkers and tighten the circle. Perhaps there is a subscription model that offers tiers of service that would allow the curious a lengthy time to hang out. Perhaps, posting questions, classifieds for subscribers, but the lurkers could have access to the posts.....or somesuch. I am willing to pay if the model could be as inclusive as possible.

Maybe something like how Wikipedia or PBS does it (without the days long membership drives). Voluntary contributions, but everyone gets full access. I’m not sure it the ads are just to cover operating costs or if it’s a for-profit venture. Either way, I’d have no problem contributing. I’d also remove the ad blocker if the ads were limited in location as they were before. I’m not asking to get something for nothing or to have someone else pick up the tab.

I'm curious about this as well. I'm sure there's a certain percentage of "not being completely honest", but almost everyone I know says they refuse to shop via online pop-up ads simply because those ads are so annoying, even if the ad is for something they're interested in.

I plead guilty to following an ad on Instagram a couple of weeks ago for "Hanks' Belts." They look nice, but kinda pricey. Nice holsters, too.

If I run across advertisements which ruin my viewing pleasure I take note of the brand since I won't be purchasing anything from them. The more a name is shoved in my face the less attention it gets and it will retain ZERO of my dollars.

I've sprung for a few tee shirts that were advertised on Farcebook, but the ads were in-line with the normal post feed and no more invasive than the usual posts. On the few "forum" websites I frequent like The Lounge I just ignore the ads because they're usually on the side margins and not in my direct line-of-vision when I'm reading posts.

Whats a cache ?
A cache is a reserved storage location that collects temporary data to help websites, browsers, and apps load faster. If it isn't cleared occasionally those same files can instead create delays and cause your computer device to operate slower. A corrupted file stored there can also create other problems.

File? A brazing tool or a storage cabinet?

Good morning. The adds, the adds! I stopped the annoyance this morning with by using an add blocker.

I read on-line that the adds can be controlled by ad blockers. After hecking with Apple (using a MacBook) User Forums I installed ABP (AdBlockerPlus). Typically I use Firefox as my internet browser. Easy to get to work and this morning - no annoying adds. (FYI: Typing this response I see that AdBlockerPlus has blocked 6 adds so far).

As a good citizen to The Fedora Lounge I would love to be able to support their internet presence and the admin expenses. I do not know of another option. If another option is available please yell.

Enjoying an add free experience, Eric -
Thanks for the tip. I just downloaded ABP for Safari and it works quite well. There was a check box for accepting "reasonable" adds, for now I chose no ads. I think the mods are just trying to balance the books and the advertising world took over.

Hey...this sounds a lot like how i got my college degree.
I wonder if today’s intelligentsia on-line PhD crowd is beseeched by adds run amuck or if yesterday’s reference desk librarian is today’s errr...Google.

Question...Has anybody ever, i mean EVER bought anything from those usurper adds?? WTF
Nope.

I bought a pair of Vegan Leather sandals from a Facebook ad......received a pair of plastic sandals from China......so yeah, I am guilty.

I remember a Blondie comic strip from several years ago. Dagwood is asking a guy what he does for a living.

Guy: "You know those ads that fall out of the magazine when you're trying to read it? I put those in there!"

Next frame is Dagwood strangling the man.

I don't think anybody begrudges a site like this ad revenue, but managing the customer experience is, as always, paramount. It doesn't do any good to load up the site with ads so that you drive your audience away. This "we used to have to go to the library" stuff is for the birds, as well. If the Lounge wants eyes on its pages, it needs to make the experience one that is attractive. In 2021, not 1965.

I think we should just give them some time to settle this out and see where we are. I'm surprised so many of you have just discovered AdBlocker plus!
I JUST discovered it.....well, at least I was just told about it.......maybe it tastes sweeter for me as I have suffered for soooo long!
