I think the Queen wore this hat quite well, and similarly it says much of their generation as Mr.Dole's does. Nobody will ever convince me that they were not of the the greatest generation.

Played with the exposure just a bit.
The hat looks a lot like this Tom Watson but creased, from the 1931 catalog. It could predate this catalog since Mr. Curtis Williams died in 1932.

UJ always wore a hat but only owned one hat at a time. Going thru some old pics, these were taken in 1983. This hat was probably a Stratoliner that he always wore open crown.

I took a few lessons from UJ over the yrs, at a few hundred bucks per lesson. But he was a gentle giant of a man. I think part of his charm was not being intimidating.

Said to be William H. "Brushy Bill" Roberts, the William H. Bonney/Billy the Kid imposter. It turns out that William H. Roberts was really his uncle's name which he took to be a better match to Bonney.

His last name is Roberts but I can't think of his first name. He was born in Hico, TX & buried there under William H. Roberts. There are people who still want to believe he was Billy the Kid ( he would have been 105 when he died). Some yrs ago they were going to dig him up for DNA. When they excavated his grave they found the remains of a well known local man in Hico with one arm. So now they think Roberts could be one plot over & the marker is in the wrong location. In other words it's a cluster....

Jesse James shot off the tip of his middle finger as a kid loading a cap & ball pistol. None of the imposters while still living were ever brave enough to do the same to further their story. And none of the living who claim their kin was JJ & had grandpa dug up for DNA have ever realized their kin didn't have the missing finger tip.

The town of Hico would like nothing more than for the story to be true. It's their claim to fame. But knowing that it's really not true the best they can do is to continue the mystery & hope the tourists keep coming.

Kate & William, just like other royal couples before them, were handed a traditional white hat each.
White Hatting is a long-standing tradition in Calgary and is considered a symbol of Western hospitality.
The hats the couple were presented with were made from rabbit fur and took a week to make by local firm Smithbilt who have been making them since 1919 and provided hats for, among many others, Tony Blair and George W Bush.

Sad but true. Several years back, one of the preeminent facial recognition experts discredited Brushy Bill Roberts as Billy the Kid based on facial features that change over time and those that do not. Hico hangs on to the allure of the legend but modern science has mostly eliminated it as having much connection to BTK.

Yeah, that's one of Stetson's new hats, called "The Kringle". Marketed towards older men with long beards who could stand to lose a few pounds, I have it on good authority that the Red Hat Society is making inquiries.
