My latest Gannon: pure beaver in the steel color. Michael just called the 2 1/8” wide ribbon dark blue. The wider binding is tone-on-tone. The open crown is just over 6 1/8 inches open and the brim is a full three inches wide. The felt has almost a suede/antelope finish and is buttery soft. The hat encourages you to only touch the brim because the crown is so moldable that the crease will change if you touch it. It’s not the paper thin felt of some vintage hats, but it’s not too far from it. The felt also has a bit more spring back than the best vintage felt, but all my shaping has been done dry and it holds a crease well. Absolutely fantastic hat! Michael works magic with felt.

Absolutely stunning! My Gannon took a little bit of steam to set the crease. Either way Michael is a true artist. Wear your hat in good health Brent.

Michael finalised my hat's details, and went with his vintage Slate ribbon, with a single grey stitching along the brim. Michael blocked the hat 5 1/4in high on a #52block at 59.5 size with 2.5in brim. Very classic proportions. With the natural felt and that old ribbon, the hat looks like its from another time.

This is what came from Michael, and I just got her in the post today. I'll see about some other photos soon.

I haven’t had the time to take any ‘proper’ pictures of my new Gannon Highwayman, but I couldn’t bear seeing this thread all the way down on page 6. Giving the Gannon folks some love. My new Steel Highwayman, a la HurricaneJack. Hope to get back with some real pics soon. Be well y’all.

Here is my Gannon ready to ship. Sahara beaver, pounced thin, copper ribbon. I think Michael nailed the brim treatment giving it the "milaner" styling ala Leon Drexler. I think it is calling for a simple centre dent and just squished pinches to give it a casual air. This will be my shoulder season warm weather hat to be worn when it is not quite hot enough for straw.

Looks great, Robert. I’m waiting for your detailed review after you receive the hat. If it’s truly like the Milaner it opens all sorts of possibilities.

Sorry Brent, I missed this comment. I appreciate the kind words and have no idea why it’s marked as such. Maybe an old sweat? I was just noticing today that this one has my initials in it and my Highwayman doesn’t.

My first ones had no quality designation, but they showed up a few years after he got started. The one I had made over last summer has the 100X designation, though.

I just realized that Gannon no longer lists rabbit fur felt for dress weight hats. Not an issue as the cost difference between rabbit and beaver was only about $75, and I either always talked myself into beaver or Michael gently nudged me that way.

Several years ago I would have balked at the price, but it’s really a bargain compared to most other hatters and his quality could command a lot more.

I'd be foolish to debate you on this issue, so I won't. Having read through this thread, I have no doubt his prices are very reasonable for the level of quality of his hats; I just can't afford them.

Gannon in gunmetal gray 100% nutria fur felt. The open crown is 6 1/8” and the brim is three (3) inches. The brim binding and the crown ribbon/bow are 3/8” and tone-on-tone. The simple and clean lines work well with an OR style bow. As per my request, the brim is a bit thicker and firmer. The brown is very thin and easily dry creased. As with my other nutria hats, the felt has more spring back than better beaver felt, but all the photos are all from dry creasing on a fence post

This is Sunrise’s 160g dress weight nutria felt. It’s large enough to allow for most any reasonable dress hat dimensions even at larger sizes.
