Looking good Bill, the hat ribbon is just fabulous.

As promised, a woodie shirt, the hat was something that I used to check out, see the price, draw a deep breath and leave the that page. Then one birthday the hat fairy must have known, how I love it.

"Have you seen my 'woodie' shirts?" I asked Tina. "Of course I have," she replied, "I made them." Seeing my exasperation she added, "they are waiting to be ironed, if you are volunteering." "Never mind dear, it's not important."
The hat was made by Esther, the shirt, by Tina. How I love the vacation theme, it reminds me of when I was a child, when train travel was still very popular. Passengers had lots of far away destination stickers on their suitcases.

These two depict the golden age of travel from an era before the motor car was dominant.

"Ironed"? They aren't "wash and wear"??? Suddenly they've lost much of their allure.

;)
Wash & wear? Seriously? Where's your standards? Tina uses top dollar heavy gauge cotton fabric, the cost of which exceeds the price of wash & wear shirts. Add on the price of the notions, the paper pattern the wear and tear on her sewing machine, the electricity and so on. Now if you are adverse to a spot of ironing, that I can warm to, it's why we have an ironing fairy.

In keeping with Bill's woodie, this shirt depicts the famous US Route 66. It also features a woodie. It's today's chosen shirt, and it's been ironed!

Standards? My standing in modern society is, and always has been, such that I cannot conceive of a reason to have any. Okay, that's a lie, but I digress. My sixty-first birthday arrives in a few months, and I honestly can't ever recall having used a clothes iron for any reason. I'm not opposed to it, mind you, I've simply never found it necessary to learn how. In fact, I'd probably find it rather Zen-like--surrendering my focus and attention to the task at hand to make sure it's performed and accomplished to the best of my abilities; maybe one of these days I'll find out.

I normally work on Wednesday nights. But since back surgery is tomorrow I didn't go in. Borsalino Bruciato for Wednesday evening bible class and dinner out with my queen. It will be interesting to see the difference in my profile in a couple of weeks. The bad side of this surgery - I won't be able to wear my fedoras in my vehicles anymore. Right now my head is forward enough that my brims clear the head rests. My widest brim is 3 1/4" and it clears the head rest no problem.

How did the surgery go Bill? Thinking of you, how I loved that photo of you sitting up in bed with your hat on.

Aloha fabric 003.JPG
Tina found a good length of off-cut at the fabric store that she likes to shop at. It's a fabulous pattern but the fabric is poly/cotton mix, we both prefer full cotton for it's absorbency and colour retention.

However, such a pattern couldn't be resisted, what a fabulous shirt Tina has made.

Pattern matching with the pocket and the front panels.

And of course she made the trousers too, they got more than noticed, recently In the fuel station, I was asked to pose, what a vain fellow I am, posed holding my tummy in.

I’m told the surgery went well. Still in ICU but may go to a regular room later today. I just love those bigger pattern shirts you have. Tina is a wonder.

You're such a flatterer Mr. Hughes, how can I refuse such a request from a gentleman?
By the way, how's the recovery, I take heart from your posting that all is going well and that surgery has proved successful.

Actually, I'm still in the hospital. I completely lost the feeling in my right leg a week ago today. Had to get another MRI on the thoracic spine. The thought was there was a buildup of fluid on my spinal cord and another surgery would be needed. But I was fortunate. The problem was just inflamed nerves. So over a couple of days the feeling returned to my right leg and all that was lost was therapy time. I should go home this Wednesday.

Wishing for a speedy recovery for you, Bill. Spinal stuff is always a bit scary.

Let me second that. When I was 14, I was struck by a car whilst on a pedestrian crossing. The broken bones would repair but nerve ends were another thing altogether. Three operations later and I still couldn't wriggle my toes, amputation loomed. Salvation came in the name of one, Mr. Penrose. At 72 he had been trying to retire for about ten years. "Don't take the boy's foot off," he said, "let me try."

Coming round after surgery, Mr' Penrose said: "wriggle your toes for me." Wriggle. wriggle, wriggle. My father wept as he shook hands with the elderly surgeon, I had no inkling at all how close I came to losing a foot. Later I found out that Mr. Penrose had worked in the field hospitals during WW2, that is where he gained his knowledge of nerve ends. He had saved many a soldier from amputation.

Tina and I send you get well greetings Bill and today's shirt has a little story behind it.

This shirt, the fabric of which is known as, "birds of paradise," is one of the early ones that Tina made, she grimaced when I tried it on. The breast pocket is lined up but the two front panels are not. It's a large pattern the amount of waste would have been quite expensive with the fabric costing somewhere around fifteen pounds per yard, there's about three yards in the shirt. From this shirt on all future shirts would have the front panels as well as the breast pocket, all lined up. The trousers that I'm wearing are also of the ladies making, but not the shoes and hat. (You can't get the staff.)

Some years ago, during a visit to my sister, Tina remarked on a photo of me, taken when I was just thirteen. She commented on the uniform that I was wearing. It was that of the ATC, meaning: Air Training Corps. I explained to her that it was like Air Force Cadets, only for younger boys.
Strat-a-like 003.JPG
She made this shirt as a birthday gift in, I think, 2019. The greeting card was amusing, depicting: "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines."
Strat-a-like 005.JPG
Esther's Strat-a-like tops the shirt off perfectly. It's curious, both this hat and shirt draw favourable comments, mostly enquiries as to where I bought them. The answer that the hat comes from Belgium and my wife made the shirt draws praise and groans in equal measure.

The groans, because the enquirer might have been hopeful of purchasing something similar. That's when I like to tell them that my talented wife made the trousers too, can't resist it.

Now you go through Saint Louis, Joplin, Missouri,
And Oklahoma city is mighty pretty.
You see Amarillo, Gallup, New Mexico,
Flagstaff, Arizona, Don't forget Winona,
Kingman, Barstow, San Bernardino.
Won't you get hip to this timely tip
When you make that California trip
Get your kicks on route sixty-six.

The Esther made hat gets another airing, Tina made the shirt and Bobby Troup wrote the song, Route 66.
