A Whippet-style fedora of unknown make, 2 3/4 inch brim, which I rescued a month or so ago on eBay for $80. It had no sweatband or liner, the ribbon was trying to come off, and it seemed someone had used it while painting- had paint droplets on it. Sent it to Randall Renshaw to rebuild. Can't believe it's the same hat. First photo is "before", others are "after". The liner is one that Randall had sitting around and isn't meant to imply the hat's maker.
Beautiful—great job Randy and congrats Mike!

Nice save. Good teamwork. I like it better than a Whippet. Contrasting ribbons and I dig the wide binding.

Fantastic looking hat. I have a soft spot for mystery hats too. @Randall Renshaw does great work too…we just need to convince him to give up his day job.

Came in the mail today, not familiar with the maker but it seems like good quality, very nice snappy brim. Thinking early 60s. Needs a good brushing and the sweat can probably use a little conditioning. Not quite my dream hat, but I kinda like it, bit of a Sinatra feel. Fills the wait for a Mallory XV also coming in later this week!

Finished this 7XCB OR fedora conversion tonight. A conversion that couldn’t be helped, mostly.
A 7 3/8 late 50s bought recently that was spotted all up, if you all remember. $30!!!
Had to sew on new binding and added a matching 1 1/2” frayed bow.
You can see in one of the pics that it had a weird suntan line caused from the old ribbon and worse, the wind string! First I’ve ever saw of that, especially where it must have never moved and stuck way up high like this.
A wide ribbon was needed to cover it. Plus there’s that faded sweatband halo that appears fairly high on the crown of many ORs. Y’all know what I’m talking about.
Well, I have plenty of 7XCBs ORs anyway, so I didn’t mind making this one into a fedora.
My first frayed bow. I changed the direction of the slanted cuts on the bow just to make it different from the usual.
Had to clean and reblock it, which after all that scrubbing loosened up the stiff felt a great deal.
Hope y’all like it!!

Thanks, guys! Appreciate the great feedback on Mike’s mystery hat.
She turned out better than I thought. The paint was smeared into the felt all over it!
Bottom and mostly the top and in front.
Was lots of work, but a great 40s (most likely) hat—whoever made it.

Hope to retire sooner than my body does, Brent!

Fantastic job, I wouldn't have expected to like the wider ribbon so much but it looks great! Way to save a very cool hat!

Amazing restoration! Did you use a gas bath to clean it?
