Not sure the exact year of the postcard, but Mr. Dickenson built the store in 1888 in Taney City, Missouri.
Now can someone explain to me why Jno. is an abbreviation for John? Same number of letters (if you count a period as a letter) and wouldn't Jon. make more sense?

Shorty Harris was the Death Valley region's most famous prospector. He discovered the Bullfrog mine that started the great rush to Rhyolite around 1905. Despite his success as a prospector, he never became wealthy, and preferred the simple life of a desert prospector.

Lakota Sioux tribe member Ernie LaPointe & his 3 sisters were told by their mother as children that Hunkpapa Lakota Chief Sitting Bull was their great-grandfather. There was no way to verify the claim until the early 2000’s when the Smithsonian Institute returned a hair scalping & some woolen legging’s belonging to Sitting Bull the Smithsonian had in their possession since his death. With no other mitochondrial DNA available testing can only link LaPointe & his sisters back to Sitting Bull’s 3 daughters. It is most likely that his youngest daughter, Standing Holy was their grandmother.

The Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company (1881 - 1920’s)
The Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company’s medicine shows were the biggest traveling shows in the United States. The shows were so successful that the company had ~100 troupes on the road at one time. They traveled as far west as Chicago & as far south as the West Indies. Some of their early remedies were:
Kickapoo Joy Juice (moonshine)
Kickapoo Indian Oil
in 1911 the Kickapoo Cough Cure was deemed ‘misbranded’ under the Pure Food & Drug Act of 1906, due to its alcohol content.
Kickapoo Indian Sagwa was advertised as a product of roots, herbs & bark said to purify the blood & cure all diseases of the digestive system. In reality it was a mixture of stale beer & aloe.
Richardson’s Croup & Pneumonia Cure Salve
The Pure Food & Drug Act of 1906 started a slow end to the traveling medicine show era. The Kickapoo Indian Medicine Company was sold in the 1920’s for ~$500,000. Now patented, a few of their remedies survive today & are known as:
Listerine
Bayer Aspirin
Milk of Magnesia
Ex-Lax
Richardson’s Croup & Pneumonia Cure Salve is now known as Vick’s VapoRub.

The Newton Gang made up of brothers Doc, Joe, & Jess Newton plus explosives expert & skilled safe man Brentwood Glasscock. From 1919 - 1924 said to have successfully robbed 87 banks by breaking in after closing time, & 6 trains making them the most successful gang in history. Pretty successful at jail breaks too, with Doc breaking out of jail 5 times.
In June 1924 with the help of a Postal employee the Newton Gang was successful in pulling off the largest train robbery in history netting them a payroll of more than $3,000,000. All were caught & convicted. All the money was recovered except $100,000. Doc Newton was the last to be captured. Before his capture he buried the $100,000. For the rest of his life Doc claimed he was drunk when he buried it & couldn’t remember where he buried the money.

I stumbled into our local museum. They received a collection of hats that they put on display. Figured y'all would want to see some of it. These are all from the local area. Well worn and well loved.

Are there any Indiana Jones fans? This actor is called Paul Freeman, seen here portraying Dr. René Belloq. His hat goes perfectly with his suit, I love it. What's more, I love the style of his suit jacket. His hat I have, or something very similar, on Friday, following today's fitting, I shall have a blazer in a similar style.
