Anyone know anything about Schott liner compatibility? Always wished my late 80s 125 came with it’s zip-out liner and have seen a liner in the same size but clearly a non-perfecto label. Is it worth a gamble or am I on a hiding to nothing? I don’t have any intention of faffing around with zip replacement…

The only real way to knoe for certain would be to try it, but I'd suggest dropping Schott a line, they will be able to tell you which liners fit which models, or whether they current produce one that should fit your jacket.

So I am doing my taxes and I lost money on every single jacket I sold on ebay.

The rare (2 iirc) times I have sold a jacket for more than I paid could never make up for all the ones I lose money on. I do think us both being an uncommon (in the uk/us) size is a factor here, as the pool of buyers is far smaller—the jackets I’ve sold most easily are the ones that were the most too big for me! But I like to think of the money I lose as a hire fee for trying out jackets I was interested in. The only ones I’ve really had to grit my teeth on are the couple of jackets I purchased new!

Inspired by this thread: Why are zippers the weakest link in high end leather jackets? It makes total sense that the moving part is the weakest one in any item, but in a hobby where many pride themselves about not cutting corners, it sounds absurd to me that they do. Is it because the zippers in the past were awful so they resort to make them as awful to depict accurate repros? It simply is counter intuitive to buy something meant to pass the test of time with a piece that won't , specially when better alternatives exist that shouldn't raise the price exponentially.

perhaps several factors,

1st the zipper company doing this small batch repro is not the best company, probably YKK can do repro but the minimum quantity is much larger, because jeans companies usually do this and those specialized jeans buttons and rivets printed with company logo done by YKK and such have been solid in both material and construction,

2nd factor probably the thickness and the type of the leather used in modern repro paired to that already not so good zipper is far overkill compared to a period correct leather,

3rd factor modern style with lower waist pant need longer jacket, and so the zipperbox is more strained because it sits lower around the lower waist or upper hip that is affected by the fluctuation of the waist size when the person is sitting, and also

4th factor modern people care more about their jacket fit, and they don't want extra space around the hemline because it looks sloppy, so all factors combined get into these premature zipper wear.

So I bought some raw selvage denim jackets from Real McCoys; how do you care for them, and what should I do for the initial wash or upon receiving them?

I rarely if ever wash my denim jackets. Unless they’re soiled or smelly.

When I do I do a cold soak with a denim soap from whoever (but honestly you could probably use a little bit of any dark safe detergent to the same effect) and agitate either a little or a lot depending on the level of dirtiness.

It’s really kind of hard to mess up. If you use a machine, just be careful of the spin cycle and hang dry

the only dirty part on my denim jacket is where the collar touch my neck, i use upholstery cleaner foam to spot clean them

I have a pretty dumb newbie question about leather jacket.
Currently looking for a RC jacket - HWMan or Hercules would be good. I need at least 54cm P2P and 46cm shoulders.

So...... I am looking at second hand market, and can't understand how can the measurements vary so much? I see sample that is size 38 with P2P measurement of 54cm(21.4inch), but on another one it could be 50cm, same model, same colour and same size!

Other than measurement error, has anyone experience things like that? I apologise if this is too dumb of a question, just want to make sure I am not imagining things.

These were jackets that were given to the Phillips 66 gas station attendants in the 50’s. There are a couple versions of these. The maker was Modern Jacket Co. Generally, the older horsehide ones are of better quality than the later steerhide versions.

A great question! Is it a "rubber smell"? I would try diluted vinegar first. Wipe it down well with diluted vinegar with a bit of mild detergent and air out well. If that does not work you may want to try ozone, but if the rubber keeps outgassing, it may not help.
