Hi everyone,

Hope you're all looking at a great weekend.

I know that the 15% tariff on Japanese goods entering the U.S. will begin on Aug 1st, but have any of you heard any specifics? I've read articles that give broad overviews but nothing granular.

I'm specifically curious on pre-owned and vintage pieces entering - my obvious concern is that this will now add 15% to the price, and further that this will begin to diminish the number of available pieces.

I recently used a 15% Buyee coupon that will be rendered worthless if I'm hit with a 15% tariff on entry.

Sigh. Everything seems very difficult at the moment. Your thought and any specifics are appreciated, thank you.

Does that only apply to goods over $800? I thought de minimis is still in effect until 2027.

There should be no tariffs on items up to $800 The de minimis value applies to the value of the goods themselves and does not include shipping costs or taxes.

Unfortunately the same doesn’t apply to UK. Purchased a pair of JK boots from US last year. Duty, broker handling fees were over 35% of the value of the boots.

Yes. That’s my understanding as well.

No tax on goods and/or services with a value of under USD800 (each).

However, from that threshold on, additional tariff will be applied to the value of the item PLUS shipping costs, as services are taxed as well.

I never really understood the US system with their federal, state and regional taxes. All very opaque until the last moment when you open your wallet.
But in fairness, Europe always had the hefty upcharge when crossing the customs border (usually 19% tax and 3% customs). The only thing worth noting is that Trump calculates his tariffs based on trade-deficits, not taxation discrepancies which appears pretty blunt.

I'm beginning to think that what had happened might be the best thing that could've possibly ever happen because now once and for all, people will definitely be taking politics and elections more seriously. Much more seriously.
While this helps with political engagement across the board, it's unfortunate some people have to lose and suffer for more people to take elections and civic duties seriously.

About the tariffs, buying under de minimis to JP brands that don't jack up prices to foreign buyers and trying to buy when on vacation to JP help. If you're a high spender, tariff 15% may be better spent as a low season flight and accommodations for a little vacation for you and a partner or friend

I don't know, I wouldn't be that optimistic. People tend to forget really fast, see what happens all around Europe and the percentages that all the extreme right, ****phobic and racist parties get in the elections.

We're at the point right now where we are close to losing our ability to correct the system through participation.

Sorry but if the 15% tariff from Japan is the worst thing to happen to you since the election, you might need to take a moment to breath and realize how grateful you should be to buy 1k + goods from foreign countries with limited or no thought. Regardless of political views. The world is beautiful, Americans are blessed and you have a roof over your head.

Generally speaking. But I’d be interested in hearing how people’s life have been negatively impacted since the election. Maybe this tariff thread isn’t the location for it.

And I mean like truly impacted. Every elected official does things that you like and don’t like. That is just fact. You choose to ignore things if you argue with that.

Maybe you know someone deported. I know someone who was roommates with the girl murdered at Georgia. Maybe you pay more taxes. Maybe now you now get more child tax credits and have 3. Maybe you have a trans child and want them in sports or maybe you have a girl that got beat by a trans kid at the track meet. It’s all perspective. People latch too much on the fact that their problems are caused by one person. Or they latch too much on one issue.
The world is a machine that is out of your control. Go into nature. Take a deep breath and notice something new.

Maybe I just don’t live in America and also don’t subscribe to the view that those who do are particularly blessed, or at least more so than any other nationality.
But you’re right on one thing and that this thread (and possibly the FL forum) isn’t the right place to expound such views.

There's survivor bias in the reports of the people who are able to respond to this type of argument.

"You don't hear any of the people who are locked up in concentration camps complaining, do you? They must like it there!"

It's not just about a 15% tariff you pay on an import for a luxury item.

It's about the 100% tariffs importers pay for everything you will eventually buy at the store. And the effect of that on your retirement portfolio.

Your "real girl" daughter losing to the "imposter" trans athlete doesn't compare to the trans kid being beaten to death while the justice system makes jokes about it.

Going out and enjoying nature to forget about it isn't something everyone can do. When the boot is on your neck someday, you can understand.

Close the thread.

Certainly not saying more blessed than any other nationality. Saying in general terms. Not speaking in elitist terms here.

This is a outerwear forum. Lets not go down this road. I come here for escapism

Close the thread cause you feel you’re so right. There is nothing more pompous than thinking your argument or thoughts are the right one. Why would anyone want to discuss things and try to be educated. That’s half the wrong with America. I’m right no one else can be. Thread closed!

Not at all. The forum has rules that politics is off topic. Free speech allows us to talk about any topic, but the rules of the forum say it's off topic here. Plenty of other places you're free to speak your mind on topic.

Sometimes some people are right while others are wrong. Like for example, I don't know, you are talking to someone who believes that stealth planes are actually physically invisible. That person is not just wrong, that person is deeply unwell.
