Italian brands hats

I picked this Elk Brand hat up as part of an auction lot and was thinking it might be a 1920s era hat from an American manufacturer.

The hat was out of Illinois and there was an Elk Brand from that State (also one out of Philadelphia, PA).

But a look behind the sweatband shows that it was manufactured by Tullio Bertasio, Alessandria, Italy.

I found an Elk Brand bowler out there with the same logo, but don’t know who manufactured it.

I did find ads in the USA (Georgia and Missouri) for Tullio Bertasio hats from 1921 and 1923.

There are a couple Tullio Bertasio hats on the Lounge.

Can any of you Italian Brand experts shed some more light on this brand?

That is a remarkable find, Bob. Very cool looking hat as well. Haven't come across this brand before to be honest, but I will see if I can find anything on the Italian trademarks site, which isn't available on a Sunday for some reason.

Another refurb that came in this week.
Ursus fedora in a grey colour called ossido. Size 57 with the rawe edge brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 9,5cm at the center dent. This one was in a poor state, with ribbon and liner as good as gone. Both were doen by Fleur from Penumbra Hats. The hat is like new. Look at how cool the bow is done!

Cervo is an Italian maker that usually plays second or third fiddle after the big names Borsalino and Barbisio. Which is a bit unfair, because not only are they still standing, but they could make some quality hats if they wanted. Here's one.
Cervo Olimpic Super Piuma in a grey colour called "nembo" (nimbus). Size 56 with the raw edge (and double stitched) brim at 6cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Very lightweight (it is Super Piuma after all) at only 78 grams with a nice hand to the felt. Thin ribbon and unlined. Nice hat for the coller summer days.
Borsalino has a nembo colour in their assortment as well, which is also grey, but more blueish in tone.

Stefan, I would say that, all things considered, they have often been the suppliers (hidden and not) of the two brands, and others, that you mentioned. When they built their own they made excellent hats until about ten years ago.
Nothing to envy the two Bs.
I visited Cappellificio Cervo about ten years or maybe more and what they had for sale with their brand was fantastic, They have often been luxury third parties for all of Europe and many hats that I see with EU brands are Cervo products and also Panizza, but to a lesser extent.
Il cappello "Super Piuma" in color "Nembo" è SUPER
Cervo hats are among my favorites and when I see interesting ones I can't resist. But unfortunately they are not very present on the Italian market.
I conclude by saying that they have always operated on the market as a cooperative of hat makers and therefore I believe it was difficult to make common decisions to use their own brand considering the orders from the giants you mentioned :)

Thank you, Daniele. That does make a lot of sense. Not all hats I have seen made by them for others are this kind of quality, but there are some truly fine hats by them to be found.

Here's an intersting one I probably paid too much for, but it was worth it for its rarety alone.
Cambiaghi homburg in grey woolfelt. Size 56 with the bound brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Brim curl is still a bit wavey due to poor storage and it has some mothdamage on the underside of the brim. Cambiaghi was a manufacturer specialised in woolfelt, but we rarely see homburgs made out of wool. Reason is that they often were "Sunday best" hats and/or aimed at customers who could afford furfelt.
This one is probably a forties hat. The sweatband mentions the 9 grand prix, the last one of which was 1937, so it is later than that date. They did a pretty good job on it: the hat weighs 137 grams.

No doubt, Stefan: Very interesting and rare one! Is it my eyes/smartphone, or does the grey felt have a purple tinge? This is very exciting because it reminds me of my 'Tiger Hat' Homburg, which is also made in Italy.

Thanks, Matt. It could well be it has some purple toning, but you're asking the wrong man here: I'm more or less colourblind, so such nuances in colour are lost on me.

That's interesting, Stefan, because I would never have noticed if you hadn't said it: your shirts, jackets and ties, the coats and scarves, and of course the hats, all of your outfits are always so wonderfully coordinated - both in style and especially in COLOR!
