Driving in a suit or sport coat: Jacket off or on (and buttoned or un-buttoned)?

I keep mine on all day at work, and generally just leave it on for the ride home too...

Terminology: US vs. UK - 1942

Regional dialects and vocabulary are disappearing even within the US, at an alarming rate. Exposure to national TV with talking heads on there with bland, non-regional accents is dumbing down the language. Even as a child, my relatives from Northern Kentucky spoke differently than the ones who...

    Allen Edmonds:How many??

I bought my first pair around 1989, black calf Arlingtons, long since worn out and tossed. At the moment, I have the following: Arlington, dark brown McAlister, black Bridgeton, tan Grayson, merlot and burgundy(corrected grain) Brookwood, chili Saratoga, medium brownish color, unsure of the...

Had an interesting conversation with my father the other day

Good grief...dinner was great, pastrami sandwich on a pretzel bun with a side of cottage cheese, but my dad announced that he can't find the tools, doesn't recall what he did with them. Further , my parents are going to their winter home in AZ next week and promised to look when they get back...

Had an interesting conversation with my father the other day

I surely will, now if I can con my dad out of the shoeshine valet he's had since I was a kid, with the "Shoeshine 5 cents" on the side, I'd be all set. I imagine it dates from the 60s and is tacky-retro cool.

Had an interesting conversation with my father the other day

We went out to dinner, and he casually mentioned that my great-great-grandfather had been a shoemaker, and did I have an interest in all of his shoemaking tools? I about fell out of my chair. One, I was not aware of the occupations of anyone prior to my grandfathers, and second, I had no idea...

    Show us your SHOES !!!

Yup, 12D, clear as a bell. I can get the right one on, but wouldn't want to wear it for any length of time, can't even get my left foot all the way in the shoe. My Breather Wright Arch preserver tassel loafers fit just fine...

    Show us your SHOES !!!

I just wish the Wrights fit...they are nominally 12D, but fit more like an 11C, which is a drag. So, they will be going for sale one of these days...

pleasant surprise at the cobbler today

I read recently that there were 200,000 cobblers in the US in 1950, and approximately 4,000 now. People buy disposable shoes and leather goods, it seems to be a trade that is dying off, like real barbers.

pleasant surprise at the cobbler today

I was just reading something a cobbler posted on another forum...apparently the white lugs were built-in wear indicators...when the white lugs were gone, time for new heels.

pleasant surprise at the cobbler today

I picked up 5 pairs of shoes from my local cobbler, they came back in a large paper Kroger's bag (classy huh?), which is the way this particular vendor has always returned shoes. Anyway, everything looked just fine, until I got to the bottom shoes in the bag. They are an older pair of LL Bean...

And one more...I believe these are made by Footjoy, they are marked as "Bennie's Shoes" which I understand is in Atlanta...note the darker laces, which is typical of Footjoy tassel loafers.

    Show us your SHOES !!!

How about a pair of Allen Edmonds Saratogas in a cool golden-brown color...I suspect these are late-70s production.
