I have just recieved the Heyday trousers and they fit lovely! Make me look really slim!
I also recieved the Fleur dress that I ordered for my birthday and it is a beautiful pattern and fabric.
Its a shame its nearly autumn so I will not have too many opportunities to wear it this year!

I've just ordered my second pair of Heyday trousers in navy - they do fit beautifully. At my ballroom studio there are 2 of us who are aficionados of the vintage look, and we both wear those trousers. What is interesting is that she has a very 20's build, a tall drink of water, straight up and down, whereas I am pretty petite and hippy but with a small-ish waist, and in my opinion they are flattering on both of us (I only hope we don't wear the same colour on the same day!)

OK so I clicked on the first one and I have to say that is the first time I have seen someone addressing a public thank you for sex on line. Perhaps I am a bit sheltered.

How to dress vintage with what's available in stores?

Basically I can't sew....I will attempt to once more when we are moved out of our house and into the new one, but even then, it's a long shot at best. I live in the po-dunk South of USA, so thrift stores that carry good quality vintage items are non-existent. My size is weird so ordering online is never a good idea. Does anyone attempt vintage looks with what they find at Target, Kohls, JCPenney, etc.? How would I go about doing this? Thank you!

I think this is definitely possible. You just need to have in mind what styles you are looking for. Look for classic separates, such as skirts, cardigans, twinsets, blouses, etc. Vintagey styled shoes and clothes keep cropping up at these stores, you just need to keep your eyes open and be patient.

you can buy at online stores or sellers, since they often list the measurements of the garments they sell. i found quite a few items on etsy and they turned out to fit really well. just don't go by regular sizing, but measure yourself well (and don't lie to yourself about your size) and you should be fine...

if you really don't want this i'd suggest you study pictures of vintage clothing and look for garments that are similar. usually they will be adapted to today's style, or the quality might be poor. if i buy at regular stores i usually go for basics and timeless pieces that never really change...

you are lucky that a retro style is kind of 'in' though. many stores sell wide skirts or pencil skirts now, the downside is that they are usually very short.

good luck!

I totally go along with Crwritt's advice, good accessories really pull a look together and keep going to those thrift stores, i hit my local one pretty much everyday and it does pay off, although i can sometimes go for weeks without finding anything. I think you will be in luck what with their being so much vintage style clothing in the shops at the moment. I wear mainly forties and fifties, probably fifties clothing more at the moment and there are loads of cute cardis and dresses about in the shops, so i can bump up what vintage stuff i do have.

I too live in the south, albeit in a larger metro area. I have bought almost none of my vintage online - maybe 1 or 2 pieces. 99% of mine has come from estate sales and flea markets.

I don't dress vintage every day. For work, I wear a lot of "vintage inspired" looks. I've actually found a lot of cute dresses and shoes at Target, Kohl's and even Payless Shoes, believe it or not. (Right now Payless has some really cute 1930s-40s heeled oxfords.) For example, today I'm wearing this (apologies in advance for the crappy pic taken a few months ago on my old Blackberry):

Everything I'm wearing is new, except for my necklace.
- cardigan from Express
- dress from Target, about 2 years old
- new black leather belt & heels
- 1940s bakelite necklace bought at flea market

I think if you know the basic "look" you're going for, you can buy pieces that fit that. If you're into 1940s, I frequently see a ton of platform & peep toe heels, and summer espadrilles, at Target. Last summer Target had a ton of chunky bakelite-esque plastic jewelry for almost nothing. I love the 1940s but for daily wear, I tend to wear a lot of 1950s shirtwaist dresses, cardigans, heels & ballet flats. I have good luck at thrift stores because shirtwaist type dresses had a revival in the 1980s, so I can sometimes find "1980s-does-1950s" dresses for cheap at those shops, or even at the occasional garage sale.

Study the "look" of the style you want, and then you'll be able to spot modern pieces that fit the bill.

Accessories also help make the look. Hair flowers or combs, a vintage hairstyle or makeup, nice jewelry - all of those things go a long way to pull the whole look together.

ForthWorth Gal - you have great style and an eye for style. I never would have guessed that outfit to be new. Wonderful suggestions.
I also remember reading advice from LadyDay in another thread. She said to look for classic clothes in shops where the old ladies shop. They have the basics like cardigans, blouses, pencil skirts and trousers. (not an exact quote, just what I remember)
Yes, vintage or classic style is available everywhere. It's all in how you pull it together.

I do love the new LV collection for A/W but what strikes me as odd are all the fashion magazines referring to the "Ladylike" look for A/W - I mean years ago women just dressed that way as a matter of course and I doubt it was referred to as ladylike - it just was what it was. I also read an article about a 1950's make-up style and the make-up artist referred to it as "good manners make-up". So having red lipstick means you have good manners? What does one have to do with the other? It was one of the most ridiculous things I had read in a fashion magazines and there have been plenty of those to choose from over the years....

I'm probably not explaining myself very well - I have an awful head cold so I'm not exactly firing on all cylinders at the moment but I hope you all know where I'm going with the above!
