I'm wearing the herringbone (birdseye) brown, green and black in my avatar photo. Haven't had much success in uploading any photos here yet. First impression of the colour to me is a brown, but if you look closely you notice the green - a bit like the effect of mossy pine tree bark. The brown threads are a hazel colour, but work with the black threads to give an overall dark, subdued brownish colour. I don't have much fashion sense, but I don't see why it wouldn't work with a brown jacket or a range of colours. I even wore it with a blue grey shirt and it even seemed to work okay with that. When I first got the hat, I wondered if I shouldn't have ordered the extra full size, because it seemed to want to poof up on my head, the fabric being quite soft and light, but seems to be wearing in a bit now, taking shape and seems to look better every time I wear it.

Hat People Cap Shades

A couple of photos to give an idea of the colour of my new hat people cap. It is the herringbone brown, black and green in the full cut. When it first arrived, I thought maybe I should have gone for the extra full cut as it seemed to want to sit straight up on top of my head, but now it seems to be getting a bit of shape and folding into a bit better bash. I like it more the more I wear it. You can see the way this fabric changes shade a bit depending on the light, what you are wearing and the background.

Thank you Adnamira! You're right about it changing color/shade--on my monitor, in those photos it looks more charcoal than brown. Regardless, it seems to be a rather versatile material that would go with just about anything I'd wear...looks like I'll be placing an order soon.

BTW, I think your hat suits you. I know what you mean about the material taking a while to take shape--I've been wearing my current Hat People cap (in the apparently no-longer-available black, white, and grey Herringbone) for over a year now and it's shape is still very much like your cap, but I don't wear it every day and really don't fuss with it much. With my oversized noggin I should probably consider the extra-full cut as well, but I'm concerned it would just be too much material for me to deal with. Give it time, it'll eventually give in to your demands.

Yeah, it does have a charcoal look about it. I think it is looks rather vintage. They always say that Grey goes with just about anything, and when I first wore it, I thought I might have been better going with the lighter grey herringbone shade, but I am getting more used to it. I have hazel-green eyes, so I am starting to think I made the best choice. It's a very comfortable cap to wear, even when it is warmish - my head sweats terribly in those synthetic name brand caps with the polyester lining. When I measured my head, it was just over 23 1/4 inches, so I went for the 23 1/2 size and it is perfect - the elastic in the band allows you to make it more snug if you need to. Yeah, Zombie_61, I know what you mean. The extra full cut is appealing in one way, but it is hard to know how it would look. I think it would be a fun look to wear to a party, but may look a bit unruly and a bit sloppy on more formal occasions. Now this cap is taking shape, I am quite happy with dimensions of the full cut - it's a bit slouchy, but still a convenient size to chuck on the desk, seat of the car, or stuff in your pocket. I notice the way a flat cap or newsboy sits looks on your head, depends a lot on the shape and size of your head. Much to my chargrin, because women seem to have usurped a lot of men's fashion styles, women often look good in caps, because they generally have smaller heads and more hair, so they can wear larger sized caps and get that oversized look; whereas for us fellas with bigger heads, a lot of flat caps and newsboys are a little too small in dimension. Anyway, it is not how big your cap is that matters... erhh

Excellent review! It shows off the cap well, and shows how soft and pliable the material is. I think "vintage" is a good description for that material; it gives the cap a classic look, which is exactly what I like.

My head measures out at 60 cm, which converts to roughly 23-5/8"; as usual (for me) that's between the sizes listed on Hat People's website. I can't remember whether I went up or down a size, but my cap fits me perfectly without having to use the elastic band so I'd like to duplicate that. It would be nice if Hat People would include a size tag for knuckleheads like me who can't remember what size they previously ordered.

I don't have the smaller head but I do have more hair (currently shoulder length) so I might be able to get away with a fuller cut...or not...I do like the look of my current hat...decisions, decisions...

Again, thank you for offering your opinions and posting photos. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a cap to order.

Great video review that the cap looks great on you. I am waiting on my denim cap from the Hat people in the same cut. Like the material also I am not plaid person so I go for a more overall color and the charcoal looks good. Might order one of those next.

Thanks, The Wiser Hatter. I am interested in the Black Watch Plaid mainly because I am a superfine wool grower in Australia, so a shirt weight wool is of interest to me... but the plaid worries me, because I kind of associate plaid with Private Girl's School skirts - I don't know whether I'd feel comfortable with the thought of wearing that on my head. Maybe if I was Scottish. Ah well, I will just have to watch and see if they bring out any other shirt weight wools in future. Coming into Autumn here and this HP cap is quite light, so I will be right for the next 6-9 months. I've been searching for about twelve months for a cap that is just right, kind of a signature cap maybe, and I am thinking I might have finally found it.

I just like to have a change of colors I wear caps a lot to work as I work in one of the largest commerical bakeries in the US and there is flour dust everywhere. So I don't want to get flour on my OR or Fedora's so caps are the way to go. An most caps are grey or brown so I am getting the denim cap for a color change.

Payne Stewart; Kangol Patchwork; Christy's Plumpton

So many posts...so many caps. Anyway, thought I'd show some of my favorites.

I'll start with these three:

- Christy's 3470 Plumpton wool herringbone.
Note the different sizes of the buttons - 20mm on the Stewart, 23mm on the Kangol, a whopping 30mm on the Kangol.

Jonathan Richard; Hat People coat weight

Here's three more caps, all of them of a heavier material.

Clockwise from upper left:

And here's the insides:

You may notice that I've removed the label and plastic cover from the grey cap, and only the plastic (held by stitches) from the rust J. Richard. It's much more comfortable to me without the vinyl!

Some shots on a head:

I find an interesting difference between the 8-piece and 6-piece caps. The former are more uniformly round, and they may project just a bit more on the sides (where there's a seam) for a given diameter. The latter are more angular which can be nice, and a tad narrower on the sides where there is a panel.

Woodfluter, that's a great collection of caps and you can enjoy the residual coolness effect of the sunglasses, they go nicely with the caps.

Thanks, I keep changing my mind about that black watch fabric - I just find it hard to imagine how it would look on my head. I am finding the brown, black, green herringbone quite light to wear and it is coming into winter here in the Southern Hemisphere, so I will probably order one of the heather caps before a shirt weight wool one. I was trying on my various flat caps last night and was amazed at how comfortable and soft the hp cap felt to put on compared to the others - lovely cap. I think ivy style caps suit me better than newsboys, but I love wearing my hp cap so much, I keep grabbing it instead of the others, and the cooler season means I will be able to wear it more often - yay!

I'm just surprised, are these 60-80 + dollars normal price for flatcaps, i assumed they were much cheaper! The one i got in Ireland was only 11 euro and it was a nice handmade piece. Looking for something brown or gray.

A little historical trivia for anyone who might be interested. I recently read a post in which the author wondered which came first, the "Newsboy" cap or the "Baseball" cap (I thought it was in this thread, but I couldn't locate it). The first example of the style of hat which would eventually become the Newsboy cap was seen in Europe in the 14th century; the first example of the Baseball cap was seen in the United States in the mid-1800s. So, there you have it--the Newsboy came first.

I had mentioned that the average man would wear a newsboy cap before the baseball came into fashion. The orginal baseball caps where a lot closer to the head. More like a beanie with a bill. I have a Copperstown orginal cap in the style.
