Pancake makeup application help!

So, I finally got my hands on some good old Max Factor pancake makeup. I'd worn it a long time ago, but not in years. I've been wearing it the past few days, and I cannot seem to get the application down. I'm definitely not a makeup novice, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! :lol:

I've been using a sea sponge. The first couple of times, I ran it under water, squeezed it out very well, and applied. I got very sheer, light coverage. Then I tried lightly spritzing the sponge with water. The coverage was a little heavier, but extremely streaky & blotchy, no matter how well I blended it. I even tried buffing with a kabuki brush after it dried, and that didn't help. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong! Is there another step I am missing? Should I try a regular latex cosmetic sponge instead?

fortworthgal, do you moisturise before you apply the makeup? I mean, as in right before application?

I think the spritzing it with water may be your problem. I usually re-wet it and squeeze it out and reapply over the needed areas.

Also, try waiting once it is dry and then use your hands to smooth it out.

I always used a latex sponge when I used Pan-Cake on stage - and yes, moisturize first.

I always moisturize first - I moisturize religiously, so I don't think that is the problem. I got to thinking that maybe the sponge is the problem. The texture of the sponge itself seems to lend itself to streaking. I'm going to try a regular latex cosmetic sponge tomorrow and see how that goes.

Well, I tried a latex cosmetic sponge this morning and I cannot believe the difference! Application was *so* smooth & easy.

Pan Cake

I actually pass the cake through a low stream of water. It just moistens the cake enough and then I use a flat headed blending brush to swirl around the cake and then apply. It seems to work for me. A latex sponge always seemed to be too wet no matter how much I rang it out. The blending brush really works at covering my pores. I do wait for my moisturizer to sink in and if my face seems to be too tacky, I will press a small face towel to absorb any extra moisturizer.
