Vintage Prom attire

Keep a watch at some of the deptartment stores too--the vintage and Hollywood starlet look are back in and a lot of designers have been taking their cue from the past. I've found some beautiful dresses at Macy's, Belks, even Sears and JC Penny that were very vintage inspired. Don't forget Etsy too! I'll bet you could find some pretty dresses on there. Might even find a seamstress or two offering their services.

fftopic: We should start a thread about prom horror stories! Things that went wrong would make a great thread and give us all a giggle!

This is a pic of DD and her friends on their way to Prom last year.

I dressed 3 of the girls, from the far left to the middle.
The furthest left is DD in a late 30s/early 40s green faille dress - she's carrying a 30s metal mesh bag from my personal stash. The girl in black next to her is wearing an glamorous 80s strapless dress with a mermaid hem that fit her like a glove. The bronze metallic empire dress in the middle was new within the last 5-10 years. The 2 girls on the right went to the local mall for their dresses.
My point is, don't rule out more recent vintage in your search. There was some nice 30s and 40s revival done in the 70s and 50s revival in the 80s. And I would agree it is ideal to try on lots of dresses, including some that don't look great on the hanger. About 20 girls descended on my house for a trunk sale - it was frenzied, but luckily all the dresses survived.

Great job, Prom Stylist! Just my opinion, but the two girls you didn't dress don't look to me like they are going to a prom at all. That red dress looks like what I wear to run errands! Funny how styles change.

I totally agree, Lotta. Funny thing is, the girl in the red dress tried on a black and coral floor length 50s dress at my trunk show that looked amazing on her. And because of some minor flaws and the fact that she's one of DD's best friends, the price was very friendly. She decided to "think about it", and ended up choosing generic mallwear.

After reading the "Comments You Get..." thread, I can understand the urge to just dress like everyone else and be done with it, at any age. Hence, I'm so glad I found this site--I feel validated in my cardigan-wearing, high-heeled, foam rollers lifestyle, which no one in my real life understands.

Well Ladies I've found a dress I want SOOOO badly...and unfortunately it's a wedding dress which means it's a no go as far as my mother is concerned...sigh...I'm about to not go lol

My friend had a black sequined dress for our Senior prom last spring, and it looked great. It was probably a little more modern, but was glamorous none the less. The only thing about a dress with that many sequins: It was SOO heavy, and since it was strapless, she had to use tons of double sided sticky tape to keep it up. Ouch!

I looked a bit like this, minus the giant bow, and the cut of the skirt was more straight. Unfortunatly, I believe she paid about the same for it. Sequin work is always going to be expensive.

Don't skip prom though! Even if you don't think it's important now...you probably will wish you went later. Trust me, I regret not going to alot of dances in high school.

Here's what I wore for my prom in 2007.

No really vintage...nor very flattering.But at least I made an effort.

I was the only girl wearing a dress,too.Everyone else was wearing costumes that looked like office attire and skimpy skirts and tops.

me at my prom in 2004. It was a cute dress, and i realize the hat is on wrong, i fell off and threw it on my head with out realizing it was on backwards for the photos. :eusa_doh:

i have my eye on a giant poofy vintage promdress, but refuse to show anyone incase someone finds and buys it before it is close enough to prom for me to justify buying it! Xxx

I don't really know if or how I'll have a prom, seeing as I homeschool. Ah well, I'll just celebrate with my family and wear a big fancy dress and take pictures.

Kiri, maybe you and some friends could dress up a little and just do something fun like bowling or mini-golf. Getting dressed up in formal every once in a while can be pretty fun and it doesn't have to be the traditional prom setting for you to have the same kind of experience!

I'm doing vintage for our prom as well! Have you been to the womens' section at dillards? They had a ton of vintage-shaped cocktail esquer dresses, off the shoulder, with swing skirt(mine is solid black, some had purple skirts and lots of other colors) They also had a lot of vintage inspired dresses. Even the dresses in the cookie cutter section were a little 50s-esque( with some cute custom accessories, you could make it your own)
The plus of a less dressy dress that can be snazzed up woth accessories is that you can wear it for other things. Like graduation
