Got a hat you like, but are not wildly proud of?

Please forgive my long-windedness. It's late and I should really be in bed by now.

As a new hat shopper who is anxious to put together a suitable wardrobe, but not wealthy enough to just go out and buy whatever I want, I'm struggling with some questions.

Given the realities I'm dealing with, it seems to me that I can come a little closer to what I'm after if I make some informed choices. I'm sure I have options, but they will inevitably require compromises. For my first hat, I dove in with both feet and bought the Akubra Federation. It came in the right color and the price was not at all unreasonable. I did not buy the Federation Deluxe because the color wasn't right (no dark grey) and the price was just a bit higher. I'm sure the felt of the Deluxe is worth the cost, but the Federation seemed, well, more than adequate for a first hat.

Now, I find myself terribly interested in a brown fedora. Having no access to a shop where I can lay hands on an affordable (< $100) fedora nearby (or at all as near as I can tell), I have perused OFAS extensively for a few days now. I may be onto a winner -- the right hat in the right material and color for the right money -- but it's been frustrating. Most of what I'm finding out there for not much money are wool felt hats that look fine in a picture and seem to meet the specs in terms of size, brim, crown, etc., but may or may not be worth having.

I am also tempted to post up a WTB in the classifieds here on the Fedora Lounge, but it seems folks here tend to keep what they have because they like it, or auction it off when they decide they don't. For some reason, I'm just not quite sure how to approach a classified to solicit the purchase of a really nice size 7 1/4 fedora that folks just don't want kicking around their closet anymore (the enormous generosity of deanglen excepted).

I have a vague understanding that an inexpensive wool felt hat that isn't terribly dense is likely to have issues holding shape and generally looking presentable over a number of years. I only wear a hat on occasion but I understand that a hat, like any other piece of one's ensemble, should be the highest quality one can manage in order to make a favorable presentation. But how many of you have hats that you are happy with that are not really top-of-the-line lids? Is it advisable to even risk throwing money at, say a "Super Indiana Jones", or a modestly priced hat that seems to fit the bill but isn't fur at all?

Just asking.

I bought a "deluxe fur felt indiana jones" fedora from eBay a while back, in black. I am very satisfied with this hat, even though it is not a "real" fedora hat. It doesn't have the cachet of the dobbs, stetson, or knox label, but it fits me well, and looks fantastic on my head.

With that said....

I bought the "same" hat in brown fur, and was greatly disappointed with my initial impression. Had a really sharp taper to the crown, the pinch was really, really wide and the brim was turned down front and back in a really unattractive manner. Was not as happy as I thought I would be. I gave it a lot of thought, thought some more, and instead of sending it back.....

I stuck it in the tub.

I then pinched the front nice and tight, gave it a SHARP downturn to the front of the brim, and curled the back of the brim up.

I LOVE THIS HAT NOW!!!

Still has a steep taper, but man, it really improved the look once I "tuned" it up.

I am not a professional hatter, I am not well versed in hats, I read some posts here about reshaping fur felt, and just went for it.

Good Luck in your search.

I hope something I posted helped, and if not, at least I got to share my thoughts about 2 of my hats.

Thanks
dv

My black Golden Gate Blues wool crushable hat. If I'm traveling and want to have hat as companion, that's my first choice. Certainly not a comparison against my fur felt, but it's definitely better than my Litefelt.

I never regret buying this Golden Gate; but that's not the case with my Litefelt wool.

hats that you regretted buying...

just seeing if anyone here had gone through a buyers remorse from a hat they thought would be great but in turn find it a terrible waste.

Mine was the time i purchased a dorfman pacific indiana jones fedora because i thought it would be awesome to have an indy had for once... then i watched the raiders movie and realized it looked nothing like it and when i started getting beaver and fur hats instead of wool the hat i had bought started to be questionable as to whether it was wool at all. it felt like some furry cardboard material and the hat overall was horribly made...

That's a great question.

The only hat I really regret buying is a Montecristi from Optimo last year.

Wasn't a total waste though - I learned the lesson to never deal with anyone there who isn't named Graham or Tiffani and Art Fawcett was able to save the hat by turning it into a fabulous Dualist.

There are also a few hats I regret selling - my first Borsalino being high on the list.

I bought a great taupe, bound brimmed vintage Adam that was made around the 1950's off of ebay. It really is a nice hat, made from a very soft/lite felt. When I tried it on I came to the realization that the relativly short (4 1/2"), tapered crown looks awful on me. So it has been sitting in a hat box for about a year and a half now. $35 well spent : \

Dozens.

Hundreds of $$$. But ya' cain't find a pearl without shuckin' some plain old oysters, eh? [huh]

I've put one old moth smorgasbord-ed western up a tree hoping someone will use it as a nest this spring. :D

Regret is a strong word. Even my modern Stetson Temple had its good qualities (and looked pretty sharp on me if I don't say so myself ;))

There are hats I wouldn't necessarily buy again, such as my old wool stingy, but I don't regret buying it because I got a lot of good use out of that hat.

"I would add modern day Borsalinos, too."
QUOTE: g,durand.

I really don't want to "go there again" re the above, but after some reflection, my choice just might be to have the band, sweat, and lining removed

to be replaced by ones of custom manufacture, aka Leon Drexler. The addition of a bound edge wouldn't be a bad idea at the same time.

Wow, the hate is palpable. I have modern Stetson Stratoliner, which I like very much. I also have modern Borsalinos that I like very much. I'm very pleased with my modern Beaver Brand hats (sorry they went out of business).

I know it's fashionable to say that a modern factory hat is crap, but while they may not be the same as vintage examples, they're certainly not junk. Judge each on their own merits and accept them or not for what they are instead of sneering at them for what they're not.

Christy's Foldaway felt hat. Worst hat purchase ever.
Only upside was I ended up with 2 tubes out of the deal.
My well documented modern HatCo Stetson Stratoliner adventure I have to say I ended up with 1 factory second & 2 new ones basically free. Even those had issues with ribbon treatment & edge binding stitching.

My biggest hat purchase regret were a few customs. My biggest selling regret was a Borsolino Torino that fit like a glove but I got a great offer for. I still miss that hat..... What makes it hurt more is I used the profit from selling the Borso to fund one of the customs I grew to dislike :(

I've regretted three out of four hat purchases. My first hat was a Dorfmann Pacific Indy repro. My second was a black pork pie by Baileys. My third was a Stetson Whippet - light brown. I've given the first two away to friends. The third is now decor at my cafe. There's only one hat I wear and wear all the time. It's my signature Vintage Silhouettes red and black western pork pie creation. It literally has more personality than I do.
