Speaking of curlers, have any of you ladies ever tried rod rollers? On my natural afro hair, they tend to make very tight ringlets that look very cute two or three days after the set so I'm thinking they would make big fat ringlets on straighter hair. I've never tried them on myself when my hair was straight and I'll probably never have *really* straight hair again as I've adopted a no more chemicals policy for my hair.

No more straight hair? There is always the dreaded "hot comb"? Right?

lol I don't know if I'll do that. I've thought of it. Maybe just a blow dry and a wrap. The comb gets the hair straight but, isn't really good for the hair.

Okay, ladies. I am an old soul and have always loved the vintage world--but I am also new to implementing it into my daily routine--being a poor yet devoted college lady doesn't help. Now, I may sound naive (pity the new gal in town!) but can anyone direct me to the location of pin curlers? Are they specialty? Where can I find them? I have red hair that's just begging that retro pin-up look and I know a few of you ladies can help me out. Thank you! :)

You can just go to your local supermarket or drugstore and get hairpins or alligator clips. That is all that is required (well, setting lotion too) to do pin curls.

See this thread for more info: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=4254&highlight=pin+curl+tutorial

I've also used bobby pins and roller clips (big smooth bobby pins) to do pincurls in a pinch.

Long Hair Styles

Hello,

I have very long hair, down to the back of my knees. I'm not on my home computer, so I can't post any pictures of myself, but I found a few pictures of long haired ladies of the era to share.

The first is Blanche Thebom. She was an Opera singer in the 40's and 50's who had VERY long hair. You might be able to find more pictures of her is you do a search.

Here's a cute lady in the 40's who won a long hair contest.

The next is Patricia Morison. She had the longest hair in Hollywood during her time and was pushed as a rival to Dorothy Lamour. I couldn't find a very good picture of her hair to post, but you can see it in her movies, including Song of the Thin Man. (I know you all bought the box set)

I hope that you enjoy these pictures and get some hair style ideas.

Collassal Failure

Okay I failed miserably with my hair today. I actually washed and set it last night in rollers and slept with them in (my hair would never set if I tried to do it in the morning and I don't wake up in time) So I had an uncomfortable sleepless night trying to find a comfortable position. The this morning I took them out hoping for 40's glam and got 60's poof...the bottom layer barely curled at all it just rolled right out, and when i brushed it out, oh sigh it was just terrible. I ended up pulling it up into a pony tail with the ends rolled under cause i couldn't even find my snood, and fiddled with the curls in the front until it was passable. Then as if that was traumatic enough, we pull up to our classroom (my husband and I teach early mornin bible study to high school students) and the sky lets loose with this absolute deluge of rain. In three seconds what little I had managed to salvage was completely destroyed. :rage: Mama said there'd be days like this......

It's those dreadful hair days that make the rare "perfect" hair days so timeless and wonderful....
While we're on the subject of curls (ah, the joy!!!)--I am (again) new at this--what exactly is "setting lotion" and can it be found in a normal store such as WalMart (I live in a small college town with few specialty stores) or is it better found at a salon. If it's as conventional as WM, what brand do you ladies recommend?

Thank you so much!!!!

I found "Lottabody" setting lotion at the local KMart just last month. It even happened to be on sale! It is in the black hair care section. The bottle says to apply it to dry hair, but I use it on damp hair, blow it dry, hot roller it and it comes out just great. I think it used to be made by Roux or Revlon but now it is made by a company called Colomer, whoever they are. The bottle is whitish/lavender and has a purple cap and was 8 oz. for $2.49. All they had on the shelf was Original Formula, which worked well for my thick coarse damaged hair. Hope this helps. Happy hunting!

You know I have a liquid hair wax that i've used with pretty good success instead of a setting lotion. It probably acts the same way as a setting lotion, I'll have to try lottabody and see how it compares. The one I've been using is Volumize it volume and hold control hair wax. it says it thickens controls and amplifies. It works pretty well to keep the frizz down.
Does anyone have any tips on making the hair fixing process go quicker? The last couple times I've really done my hair (other than tying it back or throwing it up in a rush) it's taken me close to two hours to achieve a nice 40's look. That and my husband has decided that he loves the clothes from the 30's - 50's but he doesn't like the hair. He thinks it's the rolls that he doesn't like because both time I've done rolls he's hated it (hey at least he's honest)So I'm trying to find a blend of something that won't take me forever and that is true to the period but maybe not so much the rolls and high curls...I'm at a loss at this point, my hair is about halfway down my back...I'm trying to do some research to find some more styles but any help would be so wonderful!

Rosie, those pictures are great! Beautiful!

I have long hair, and I usually just do a chignon and maybe stick in some adornments like pearl pins or flowers. I am not adept at replicating the vintage hair styles as the other ladies!

Does anyone have any instructions or directions on doing those rolls with long hair? I can't seem to find anything but some very vague instructions on French Rolls.

I have just had my very thick, waist length hair cut off to shoulder length because i just couldn't be bothered with it any more, and I wanted to do some of the nicer, prettier styles with rollers etc. My hair was so heavy that it wouldn't hold in rolls or curls and after 12 years is just had to go ! I am sitting here in my new heated rollers, very excited at the prospect of playing with it before I go out tonight.

LONG HAIR in the Thirties!

Well, I've been looking at all those wonderful cropped hairstyles from the 20s and early 30s, but I have very, very long hair. I have always succesfully rolled it into 40s styles, but I have yet to come up with a really convincing early 30s one.
So:Can anyone help with photos of ways to style long hair from the 30s?

Hi Tottie and welcome to the Powder Room!

I read somewhere that muscians and eccentrics usually had longer hair, but I am yet to find a photograph!

I have long hair too! I love the mid to short styles of that period, but they're not for me... Usually the movie exotic and femme fatales of that period had longer hair as opposed to the comedic and ingenues or even the older women who were not as adventurous enough to go short...My first thought is Dorothy Lamour. She always had her hair piled on top of her head, or side rolls, chignons etc. She had successfully done this through the 30's... OR you can just fake it and pin up the back of your hair to make shorter styles!

Yes, I've tried pinning into curls to cheat those short styles... but it does tend to look 40s if I'm not careful.
Thanks for the welcome, by the way... and Dorothy Lamour! Hadn't thought of her. Though I won't be trying that centre parted look. It makes me look like the Duchess of Windsor!
