For many men, casual slacks and a polo shirt are the dressiest things they own. No one cares how they dress (I have been assured of that on this forum) so why not go for comfort?

It wouldn't surprise me one bit. People nowadays have no idea how to dress for an occasion. There are no standards held out so they just go everywhere in their gardening clothes. :doh: It used to be considered an insult to show up at a function dressed like a bum. Now they pat you on the back.

You are quite right. People will pat each other on the back for "dressing down" and How Dare you question or say something. That is the problem. you are not allowed to judge.

So everyone ends up looking like they are ready to clean a toilet. Coming home just a few minutes ago, I saw a woman in a bath robe just walking the street……:doh:
I remember, during the Florida real estate boom, one of the news channels was at a Ferrari dealership. There were men covered in drywall dust and masons covered in stone dust, buying $100,000 plus cars. The News man asked if that was normal, and the dealer said, "every day is like this!"

I once went to a job interview covered in plaster/drywall dust. It was pretty unavoidable in order to make it in time. I explained beforehand and got the job

I went to church on Easter Sunday, dressed in a suit and v-necked sweater with tie. I was surprised how many of the congregation were just in trainers, jeans and sweatshirts.

Probably partly the fact that we are the oddity against a much more casual cultural norm (I'm just glad that the fifties futurists were wrong and it's not all uniform jumpsuits now...), and partly the fact that for a much higher proportion of folks in some areas than might once have been the case Easter isn't of particular significance. [huh]

Yes, I experienced the same thing. People have lost their self respect and replaced it with phony self esteem. You can't tell them they look like a bum because it will hurt their little esteem.......

It should be called "Bring Your P*mp/John To A Dance". I've seen some very revealing prom dresses leaving little to the imagination.

I'm sure its more about respect than the casual casual norm. I'm also sure this may have been discussed in these threads before but dressing down, dressing like a bum or a slob simply tells me you have no respect. If you dress badly for a social or business meeting, you have no respect for the people you are meeting. One's behavior needs to rise to level of the occasion and anyone who dresses like a bum for church, or buying a Ferrari, certainly has no respect for those they are meeting. I'm sure there are other psychological inferences that can be made about it such as sending an overt message of no respect. Stop and think, if someone came to you to interview for a job dressed like a bum, how would you react to that?
