Does anyone else have a hat made by Grizz? (Hats By Grizz - Made With Joy)

He makes hats of the 1800s by hand - often while you watch. Quite an interesting character and I like a lot of his styles. He tries to offer simple correct early styles. I saw many of his hats all the way back to the Battle of New Orleans bicentennial. But his interest is early western.

I like his style and wouldn't mind seeing him in action. His Facebook says he travels around to different events and makes hats in his tent. Sounds like a pretty awesome gig!

I met and watched him in Natchez, MS (Jefferson College site) during one of the War of 1812 Bicentennial events. He made a number of the early Hardee hats for the US Army reenactors and a few western hats for other people over the course of the weekend. They are not as finely finished as our fedoras, but the hats definitely have a certain character and seem very durable.

The sweatbands look really crude but I actually kinda like them in a way. Looks like something a mountain man might put together. I don't think I trust the felt though. It looks unstable. I'm thinking shrinkage and taper would be a real problem. I once purchased a rabbit felt blank that reminds me of how his hats look. I'm thinking they might be the same felt.

His hats are inexpensive and I was willing to take a chance but they refused to sew in a leather sweatband even when I offered to pay more for it. Cotton sweatbands are dealbreakers with me. I do like that he’s upfront about the hats not being blemish free; working hats rather than show pieces.

I heard he uses wool felt. I hate wool felt. But he does nice work and I too wouldn't buy one without a leather sweatband.

I had a funny but off putting interaction with him. I too asked him if I sent him a leather sweat could he use that in a hat instead of his fabric sweat. He sounded offended when he replied..."Absolutely not, the fabric sweat absorbing bands were his trademark and he would not adulterate one of his hats by replacing the sweat" Like you, the fabric sweat was a deal breaker and I passed.

I've not seen one of Grizz's hats in person so I can't comment on their composition or quality, but I do get a kick out of watching his instructional videos and I just can't help but respect a hat maker that says, in essence, "these are the hats I make, take 'em or leave 'em". You go Grizz!

I have one of Grizz’s hats and I love it. Wonderfully comfortable and has its own ‘personality’. Little bit rough around the edges, but if you can overlook that, so much better than a modern machine made hat (and I have a few of those). He has a good variety of styles. I have the Reaper hat and would recommend to anyone.
