Apologies if my turn of phrase rang in that direction. It wasn't meant to.
I don't know... I always associated the Fedora with the golden age Hollywood tough guy. More than 95% of the comments I get are positive, but you still gotta be somewhat tough & self confident to sport a fedora these days. Negs, looks, dingbat "comedians," internet hate, hat-envy, whatever. Its a jungle out there, and besides, most people-- men in particular-- have little concept of style. Just look at 'em! By the standards of the Fedora Era, grown men dressed like children in shorts, sneakers and ball caps look downright immature and slovenly. Who looks ridiculous is a matter of perspective.
The self confidence to march to the beat of your own drum is a valuable life-attribute, and its what separates us from those who stare with envy from under their baseball caps. Hell, if anyone were to ask me for advice on how to build self confidence, lose their hangups about what other people think, and stop seeking validation from others, I'd tell em, get a fedora, get used to wearing it in public!
Bottom line: I like fedoras, so I wear 'em.

I had three nice comments in the same day on a black Stetson Standard Quality dress hat... very unusual for me to get a response to a hat. I think I'll bring it to NYC tomorrow!
You're right, I'm no doctor but I do chat with some occasionally on TFL, as well as lawyers, plumbers, factory workers and even a few like me, either current or former law enforcement officers.
Some of us, including me have said things that were inappropriate or the times we look back and thought, I shouldn't have hit the send button. All that I could do is issue an apology to those I may have offended and move on. This place pretty well polices itself and most offending parties will be called out by a fellow member without intervention from the Bartenders.
Many of us have had or have trying lives. Some have shared them on these forums as a way to reach out to others because, outside of the "mostly" friendly confines of the lounge, they may have no other outlet.
I do wish you found more things to be enthusiastic about and maybe over time you'll at least come to appreciate this place a little more. Most of us come here to share what we enjoy with like minded people, when those around us have no interest in our passion for hats and cowboy boots, in my case and to get away from the drudgery that life sometimes is.

When I was attending Portland State University in my late 40's I was continually being mistaken as a professor. (Tweed jackets with suede elbow patches will do that).
Since you'll be dressed in a sports jacket and slacks, you should be viewed as "professorial" rather than a student. You are there to advance your comprehension and knowledge with a far more advanced and stable outlook on life. This is as it should be.
