Gee, finally a question that's right up my alley!

I think the Mae West you are referring to is the Navy Mk I. These are the type used in the early war (Coral Sea, Midway). They are really hard to find and when you do they're a zillion bucks :(

Good news is, Jerry are WPG has a repro he will be getting soon. Of course I've been waiting well over a year for them to arrive but he assures that they are coming.

You might try this site. http://www.whatpriceglory.com/usnmaewest.htm

You're gonna kill me for this, but they're not impossible to find and they're pretty cheap, too. Picked one up for $5 at the local flea market about a year ago. MINT. Yellow paint still on the rivets in the straps, straps clean, bright and unstreched, dark black markings, unrusted bright chrome fittings. Complete with lead seals on the lanyards and cartidges in the holders. Prewar dated, 1939.

I'll admit that I was REALLY freakin' blessed on that one.

It's now in a VERY large collection in Oregon, and I've got a killer RAF ensemble coming in return, along with a few other goodies.

And yes, the proper name is MK I.

I ordered one yesterday...I'll tell y'all how it is.

Well, as usual, Jerry came through again with a quality product. The seams are tight and the craftmanship appears high.

My only complaint is that there is, "April 25 1944" stamped on it and this type of Mae West was an early war version and quickly replaced by the B-4, especially in 1944.

Some pilots wore these throughout the war, carrying them from squadron to squadron with them (mostly land based units). There is even a 1943-44 photo with Pappy Boyington and some of his pilots wearing these.

If you can spring $165 plus $8.50 S+H, I'd say go for it!

Thanks for the review. I was wondering if someone could make a Mae West repro that looked good. The ones used in "band of Brothers" were aweful!

My birthday is coming up so i am putting it on my list for my wife. She bought me a STEN last year so maybe she will come through again!
