Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

Here's my Stetson guessing mid to early 30s, no liner, large eagle USA crest
sold at Tom Campbells Smile hat shop, Calgary, Ontario. have no idea why the pic is sideways,
anyways, it feels like #1 quality,

that hat is at the shop but I just took pics of this Real Nutria quality that I just got off the bay, more than I've ever paid for a hat but really wanted a nutria quality , figured I might've been bidding against one of you guys, I had to re-sew the sweatband in the short-cut way, which I didn't plan on doing but the reed was damaged at the bag and it wasn't going to be able to handle the turning inside out,

ALSO wanted y'alls input on cutting the brim down a 1/4" to 3/8" and then putting a pencil roll on it so it's overall width is about 3 1/4" - that way I would actually wear it, I'm afraid as it is now it'll just end up in the box not getting used.

It was most likely sold from this building on Market St, currently housing a thrift shop.

Both hats are beauties @WDurableGoods ! Interesting re-order sticker over the original in the Nutria. Wonder if it was resized at some point. It's your hat do do what you will, but I'd personally leave it as is and learn to wear the big brim proudly -- I'd probably even flatten it more. You're gonna want more hats anyway so you can find that raw-edge in the future and curl away.

Well, I think it's fair to say we're mostly against modifying vintage hats outside needed refurbishment. Especially on such a pristine example.

What kind of hat are you looking for? We can help.

But oh man....your idea is playing with fire here. Changing a very rare, undamaged 20s or 30s hat is almost heresy to a group of collectors mostly dedicated to both preserving and wearing the hats.

I have a friendly recommendation - wait for a vintage Stetson that is the style you want. If you have a hatter, you can probably resize one if it does not fit. If you don’t want this one, trade for what you are looking for or sell it on eBay. Do not under any circumstances trim the hat, especially if you think you might start collecting more hats. The one you are waiting for is out there, and if you trim this one down trust me later you will feel absolutely terrible, absolutely terrible if you modify it.

Don’t do it!

very true , especially being a bound edge I don't think I can cut it down, it has one messed up spot on the binding which I can fix with some fine thread.

I have a 3 1/2 x 6 Nutria Quality with a bound brim that I curled. So, there is that option.

Ok here’s more pics of my 4x7 Stetson , perhaps a Carlsbad but I’m not sure if the Carlsbad came in this color. I also wonder how much these old hats have changed color over time.

Very nice! To me, an embossed sweatband is a sign of great quality, and those are amazing.

I don’t think I have ever seen that sweat crest. And the unsewn back of the sweatband is more 1920s and earlier.

Are there no reorder tags behind the leather sweat?

Oh. The ultra rare white size tag. A real treasure in my book. Alan has a couple, I have one.

Late 1800s to 1920s, according to the interesting WTH guy.

A real treasure you have there. I can’t stop looking at it!

I suspect the white tag has something to do with a hat renovation at some point during the hat's early life, though I have no evidence to confirm that theory. Interesting to see the white tag pasted over the standard red manufacturing label in the hat posted above.

I think you're right Alan, it appears someone started to renovate the hat a long time ago and didn't finish, I think the original tag says 7 1/2 but it's not anywhere near that size now. ---and nice to meet you guys, amazing stuff here and I wish I would've known sooner, there should be some Fedora lounge meet up somewhere in the middle USA where we wear a hat and carry a hat, like a giant show and tell.
