Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

I have had a couple of emails from OKW offering 50% reductions on lines that are being discontinued. It is a shame to see that they are discontinuing the Rothley version of the WP with suede patches. I have one of them, in Peat Brown. It is bulkier and longer than the standard WP and although I prefer the standard version the Rothley is a fine variation on a theme.

Yes, there have been mornings and evenings when it has still been possible to wear WPs. I have worn mainly Navy, Black and Grey but Olive (Army) earlier today.
I already look forward to autumn leaves, softer light and good all-day sweater weather.

Not the season for WPs unfortunately (except for a few fleeting hours of cooler weather) - although there might be a few readers in the Southern Hemisphere. However there is a 20% off offer from Outdoor Knitwear until June 19th.

Some words about an Aero Submariner and an Aero Donegal, as promised.

XXL-Submariner-Data:
Weight: 630g
Pit to pit width: 595mm
Back length from collar seam: 665mm
Sleeve length from pit: 470mm

XXL-Donegal-Data:
Weight:440g
Pit to pit width: 580mm
Back length from collar seam: 650mm
Sleeve length from pit: 440mm

As you can already see in the pix and the data, the Donegal is way more fluffy than the way tighter knitted Submariner at comparale dimensions. So to me the Submariner appears to be more a stand alone knitter while the Donegal requires at least something like a Henley...
Though these differences both sweaters appear to have a similar insulating perforformance, as far as i could find out at these temperatures.
Both are well produced in my estimation and fit the purpose with slightly different approach. While the Submariner wears good as a stand alone the lighter Donegal would reach it´s best performance under a coat, at least in my humble opinion.

For comparison: Two knitted cotton BRAX sweaters at comparable dimensions, approx. half as voluminous as the Aeros so way more compact but at higher weight, i would estimate a similar insulation to the Aeros.

Brown sweater, weight 740g

Hope this might halfway fit the expectations, don´t hesitate to ask further questions if necessary.

Thank you for those two Aero reviews.The Donegal is quite a lot lighter and as you say 'fluffier' than the Submariner. The Submariner is very similar to the Outdoor Knitwear sub. but slightly lighter, I think, and less overtly military although it has a strong military hint. It's a stylish sweater and I like it - I shall probably get it to complement my ecru Sub. from Outdoor Knitwear.

The Blue and brown sweaters are not dissimilar to the German Navy sweater you referred to yesterday.

I have my issue Air Force sweater I still wear and I picked up a new wool German Heer sweater a couple of years ago brand new in the plastic bag. Both are very warm and comfortable. You have to wear a shirt under them as they are both very itchy.

The USAF sweater is Like our RAF Woolly Pully - the same ribbed wool, the same light blue colour (I have seen them in the States and have an American friend who wears one). They are usually v-neck, whereas ours can be either v or crew necked.
I wear my RAF sweater quite frequently.
Is the German Heer sweater the olive green Army sweater that's tighter knit than our Woolly Pully and has a flag emblem sewn into each arm?

Yes. It also has a chest pocket and the shoulders are oversewn with cloth. It is a crew neck and my Air Force sweater is V neck.

As I mentioned on another thread, I had one of those German Army (Bundeswehr) sweaters when I was a student - and would wear it as an occasional alternative to the British military sweaters. My Air Force sweater is crew neck - standard British but I like the USAF version. We’re you stationed in Europe?

No. I lived in Wiesbaden for two years as a dependent before joining the AF myself in '81.

I was never stationed there but I did try to sign up for the GLCM (Ground Launch Cruise Missile) program when that was announced by the Air Force. I didn't have enough time-in-grade to be eligible. That would have been the only assignment I could have performed outside of the United States.

I re-visted in 1986 when my sister was stationed at Rhine-Main working in the CE shop. We took the train to München for Oktoberfest that year.

In ‘81 I was still a schoolboy - although I was in the Cadet Corps at school!
Munich is a beautiful city but I know Northern Germany better, including Berlin.
You would probably like the North of England; I lived up there (in Yorkshire) for a few years. There’s very good beer, a strong pipe smoking culture, rugged countryside and historic/scenic railways (or railroads as you call them Stateside).

Bought these sweaters some years ago and BRAX is more kind of a fashion company for somewhat conservative style so the sweaters in the pix are currently not in their portfolio as far as I could see. Additionally their shop is only available in French or German.
